im actually looking at the exact same model/year as yours shamozzle, do you mind me asking what you need(litres) for 100km? ive never liked the idea of a surf because of the 2.4 tds but after a bit of reading the 3L TDs are looking pretty good, just a bit worried about the fuel consumption

not exactly the same, but i wedged a 1993 surf 3.0TD motor into my LN106, and its getting around 13L/100 with me driving like a hoon and reving its tits off with 4.5:1 diffs on 31" tyres.
expecting 10-11L/100 once i put the 33's on and drop the revs @ 100 a bit more

how much would it cost approx. to fix a leaking steering box?

depends on whats wrong and how its fixed.
I rebuilt mine myself for $15, but most places were quoting $400 - 700 ish depending on wether or not they had to re chrome the input shaft.
I found that i could fit 2 identical seals onto the input shaft thus negating the need to have in machined as the second seal was on a 'fresh' piece of shaft with no pitting.
Based on what i saw in mine (ln 106) very similar box, there is not that much that can be wrong so you just replace al seals - about 6 of them - get the parts from a bearing and seals place not toyota. and go for it.
ill find the how to link.

your surf gospel.
the only part that this didnt tell you was how to put it back together.
point 1. when putting ball bearing back in, smear the whole thing with grease then the bearings will stay where you want.
point 2. make sure you line up the teeth on the worm style gear so that they are both centered at the same time.
point 3. when using a drift to re tighten the retaining nut in the imput shaft housing, you have to keep trying to tighten it until there is no play, the shaft cannot slid in or out at all. 1/2 mm of movement will be 3-4 inches of play at the steering wheel.
its really easy and a great diy job. but be patient and follw this guide.

Think I might rebuild my box shortly.

Gonna have a go at adjusting mine next week sometime. Pump getting rebuilt next week too.
On fuel consumption they're not too bad. anywhere between 10-15l/100k depending on how you drive it. I usually have the roof racks on and the extra weight of the winch, bull bar and other bar work mine tends to hover around 13l/100k most of the time.
Great car though, given me 4 years of trouble free motoring my cousin on the other hand has a 2.4 and is swapping it for a 2.8 as I write this.

There are a few manual 3.0td's on carsales. They seem to hold there value fairly well. Looking at their prices the last few years I think they've settled for a while

apparently injector nozzels are different from the 3.0TD in the aussie lux and prado and hte japper surf, and the difference is $85 each for the Aussie vs $100+ for the japper

No, the Surf engine is a 1KZ, the Hilux is a 5L, completely different line of engines.

just went through the 99 and 2000 models, and they use the 1KZ-TE, the 5Ls arent turbod
one of my mate's uncle bought a similar surf(3L TD), thinking that because its the same engine as the one out of the newer lux's that it would be fine, but apparently the surfs are "tuned/built" for japan(climate etc), meaning they break here in Aus, but it doesnt seem that logical, can anyone shed some light?

Dunno about that. 350 thousand K's and mine still aint broke, blows no smoke, doesn't overheat, and is still good on fuel. Most of the times they just require a retune to run on our fabulous diesel we have here otherwise nothing else. If the injectors are different I never knew about it when i change mine over a while back. Essentially all 1kz series motors are built in the same place just tuned differently for fuel types, etc.

apparently the difference in injectors relates to burn patterns and times after firing- if you put the hilux injector nozzels in a surf, it runs like a dog!

so basically, get it tuned/serviced etc?
how do these compare in reliability to the 2.8 lux? bit of a "how long is a piece of string" question but its worth a shot:)

by macca81
reliability wise, i have had no trouble with mine, and i havent realy heard a great deal of others that have engine problems... and they have ALOT more power than a 2.8

the 2.8D cant smoke up a set of 205R16 Road grippers.
a 3.0TD can smoke up 31" MTZ's in 2nd

ahahah good point, mate has a 2003 3l td n can do nuts etc with 32" bighorns lol
edit: getting pretty keen on a 3ltd surf:)
