CRAPPY GQ DIESEL ALTERNATOR

Anyone have any ideas on upping the power of a gq diesel alternator?
I have only recently found out just how bad they are standard.
I asked the auto sparky about it and he said he can get it rewound to pump out up to 80amp but these sound expensive for the end result.
I know that the vacume pump runs off the back of em so this makes swaping in another one harder.

Any hints or tips or am I stuck with a rewind on the standard one.
I was kinda hoping there would be another one available that would be compatable :?:

Cheers
Brian

I had a similar experience with my old diesel Paj, 'cept my alternator was not only piss poor, but had an intermittent fault too. Spoke to heaps of Auto Elecs, but ended up buying a non-original newie from this mob:

If you give 'em a call, they'll put you in touch with one of their distributors.
They make higher power units, with stronger construction, and I think they all come with new vacuum units attached (mine did).
All up mine cost almost half of what a new Mitsu unit would have cost (not hard really, considering Mitsu mark-ups)
Good luck.

my mate has just modified his braket so that a 120A bosch alternator can fit on to the top of the original mount, because the diesels use the vacuum pump it will be expensive to get a bigger alternator with a vacuum pump. you most likely wont need a 120A ontop of the 60A, but if you got a normal alternator, say 60A mount that above the first alt. and run them in parallel (which just means run them both to the battery +ve). it will give you 120Amps output.

The mob above sells direct replacement Hitachi alt for GQs with vac pump on rear.
alt7055 about $350 70 amp

They also have another Hitachi alt3110 rated at 110amps for about $440, also with a vac pump.

I have heard of these being fitted wherby the mount on engine is ground slightly to allow bottom foot spacing to fit and maybe pulley swapped to correct offset. Ive also heard they bolt straight on to some motors..

Anyone used the 110amp alt 3110 unit?
