hey hows it going me sierra is leaking oil out of the spark plugs very badly im just trying to nurse her through till i got enough money to reco but just wondering is there anyhting that i can do to fix this problem untill then and why is it coming out the spark plugs does this mean my engine is finally F&*ked

Are the plugs actually leaking past the threads?
Not that im an expert or anything, but i havent really heard of oil leaking past spark plugs before...

Could it be the rocker-cover leaking oil? Is the engine running like crap?

If it really is as you say, could you put some thread tape on the plugs, or some lock-tite liquid thread sealer?


OR, do you mean oil comes out of the spark plug hole, when spark plugs are removed?

Mike I think the bigger problem is why there's visible oil on the plugs, not that he needs to keep it in the engine.

I agree, if it's a leaky rocker cover gasket it's no biggy, but they tend to leak most at the back of the motor, not over the plugs.

I'd say valve stem seals are shot.

If it compression tests ok, then just do the head. If compression is down, it's a major rebuild.

nah mate when the plugs are in its leaking pass the thread ive never heard of it before either

compression was at 169 across all 4 about a month ago i put a vrs kit through but didnt do the stem seals

could be getting a small amount of fuel getting past, maken the oil that has leaked from the tap cover look worse! is it blowing smoke? also whats the blow by like? and is the pvc still working right?

not sure about pvc ill clean it and check it now and ull have to explain what u mena with this blow by thing and yeah the rings are stuffed blows smoke at the bottom of hills when its been idleing down them i know my motor is stuffed but need to keep it going for a bit just till i get the money for a reco

The plugs should be air-tight, and be able to hold pressure.

They should not leak even if the engine is stuffed.

What type of plugs does it have? ones with the metal o-ring/gasket? (maybe they are missing?) or taper locking ones?

If your just trying to get your engine to last a bit longer till reco, i reckon you get your plugs to not leak. Either thread tape or lock-tite

I'd reccomend doing the valve stem seals! see if this helps.

Nope, you've got decent compression (it sounds ok to me) so the rings are fine.

The smoke at the bottom of hills is 100% the valve stem seals.

Do them and the motor should have a bit more life in it.

im still intreeged how u get oil past a air tight leek proof thread...

sorry not sure on how to do pictures but i cleans the whole block and head so i could find out where it was coming from because i just put all new gaskets in and was stumpted as to where it could be coming from and at first sign of oil leakage was from the sparkplugs and no its not coming from the tappet cover checked that its a first for me and my mechanic mates i put some thread tape on them and put them back in hopfully that will stop the leaking untill i can get the time to do the valve stem seals thanks for all your help

On Tapered threads, the head can get scored over a life time, a good clean of plug and the seat/thread on the head, and a small film of high temp silicone around the taper on the thread, will fill the scores and stop the leak.

I had a 253 that did this, also a hotter plug will be of benifit.

good tech dave 123....ive never seen oil leek out of a plug before but my guess is thats about the right way to fix it ....its a nice band aid however..... hows the oil getting to the plug in the first place, valve stem seals yes ... rering without a hone yes....rooted rings yes.( compression can be good but if the oil scraper ring is farked blowby the compression ring will cause an oily top end) ....blown head gasket yes ....i suggest you have a look here first before you try to put a band aid on the spark plugs...it would have to be going like a pig with all that oil at the top....is it smokin like bob marley on holidays??
