ive got a mate in botswana and he heads out into the bush tracking zebra and he's having trouble with punctures, he has landrover 110 and wants some split rims to make it easier for repairs in the bush, but LR never made a split rim (this is where i pointed out he should have bought toyota!) but i was wondering wether its his tyre choice thats wrong not wheel, he's main problem is thorns, so what do you boys run in the outback? be it challenge or for work?
cheers Hugh

he should look at at off road truck tyres, some thing around the 10-12 ply range, thick heavy tyres that are very puncture resisant, can find them in 7.50 r16 size, mates dad runs these on his troopy does 1000s of desert ks every year hasnt had a puncture yet.

as much as i hate the stuff, he could also run the "goo" stuff that seals punctures....

There are a few people who have put split rims on rovers. They have made them using the centres of rover rims and the outers of toyota split rims. A welder in botswana should be able to make up a set for about $5???

We had splits on the 110's in the Army - military surplus may be the answer...

I worked for a contractor years ago and we had to keep the powerlines clear of trees out west.
The previous crew to do it went through and cut all the eucalypt suckers off at about 4" from ground level.
By the time we got there the following year they were very hard tyre puncturing stakes.
Of all the vehicles there, the only one to get no punctures was fitted with Olympic Steeltrek tyres. I'm not sure if they are still available. They had a very similar tread pattern to the Michelin pictured above and quite thick rubber over the carcass. Some were regrooved 5mm.

Yep, the australian army still run steeltreks - I think they use 14 ply rated.

I don't think they'd be easy to find/get in Botswana though - might be easier to go with Michelin.

get some bar treads. They are perfect bush tyres, come with large ply ratings, have a very open tread pattern that does not pick up sticks etc and in my experience are very puncture resistant.
