Should I buy a Bundera?

Hi, I'm new here and looking for advice. My BF and I are looking at buying 89 model Bundera Diesel Turbo and have been told they are a little slugish at hills etc. It will mainly be used as my everyday car and beach work and maybe lancruiser park really nothing too intense.I owned a 81 suzuki sierra years ago as a first car and liked it for the beach work but couldnt really go off road in it. I guess I want to know if thay have any major faults etc and your opinionson them. thanks in advance for your help.

i have gained alot of respect for them, after how well my mates 2.4L petrol bundy pulled my mates GQ wagon home. they arent the lightest cars on the road. it went pretty well considering the good 4500kgs it had to pull all up, and he had 35 inch tyres on, standard 4.3:1 ratios. and the comfort in riding in it offroad compared to my worn out leafs is awesome.

As Skip mentioned ,a little sluggish but he is spoilt
.Ok so thats the worst part over.
The good points are,the engine g/box,diffs are similar to many hiluxs so parts/reliability are not an problem.
Coil springs give a good ride.
My brothers company has a bundeera in its car fleet,permanently attached to the company dinghy,its very popular on Friday afternoons.

coil ride is great against other makes you would be looking at that age of car.
yeh, a bit sluggish up hills, i have a petrol 22r model but i believe the turbo diesels are slightly better.
How much were you looking to pay for it?

the turbo diesels have less peak power and torque but are far more driveable and deliver far better fuel economy especially in stock trim (29 - 30" tyres, little or no lift). they are a good size/price/engine size compromise for singles/couples and are good for touring or can be modified fairly easily to go pretty hardcore (lockers, springs, shocks, tyres, winch etc).
the turbo diesels are also fairly tuneable and you can squeeze a few more ponies out of them for cheap. before you buy have the engine and cooling systems checked - compression, leakdown, boost, and ask lots of questions about service history - these engines are very hard on their oil and if the oil hasn't been changed religiously every 5000km bad things can happen - look for oil sludge under the oil filler cap/rocker cover, look for blue, black, and white smoke from the engine (blue = oil burning = worn rings/pistons/bores - likely on 250,000km+ models, black = partially burned fuel - needs an injector overhaul and tuning, white = unburned fuel - low compression, maybe cracked or sticking valves, broken rings or blown head gasket), hopefully the model you're looking at is a LATE '89 with the 2L-TII motor, it is a far better engine that the earlier ones. the easy way to tell which engine you have is the early engines have a cast aluminium rocker cover, the newer modes have a pressed steel rocker cover, painted black.
