80 Series Axle Strength / Questions

What breakages have people suffered in there 80 series cruisers when running 38" tyres?
I watched the nissan trials video on saturday night and looked like they would take quite a beating.
What is peoples first hand experience

Also besides OTT's 80 series hysteer arms what way could you rig the steering up when using leaf springs

I'm only running 33's on my 80 and I give it a fair flogging. Front Diff and CV's go well before axles. None of my mates with 80's have done inners either. Normally the diff or the CV's go first.

Yeah mate, the diff is the real flaw. Once I did the C&P when I had a suspect CV. CV started to click a bit on full lock so I was planning to change it after the trip anyway. Then while driving Hilux hill at Cruiser park, I heard a very loud bang and a click in a straight line. As I was about 1/2 way up the hill I hought I would keep going If possible.
Yep still got steering so must be the star not the bell, kept driving, still clicking...... Get to the top of the hill and notice oil P*ssing out of the pinion seal.
I could not beleive how easy I did the C&P.

Matt is running 80 series diff in his zook. The high pinion was pulled out and a welded 5.29 low pinion was put in.
Broken 2 cv's so far. They are a much stronger cv than hiluxs.
We are making and testing some hi steer arms on it at the moment, should be ready for sale soon.

Running 35's with heavy right foot, no axles breakages so far.
Rear diff taken a pounding - being rebuilt now - pinion gear has 3 length ways cracks in it and ready to go bang... 300,000 aint bad...
Front diff still fine but that is the weakest link... I don't have lockers yet so I might be saving the stress on the driveline...

80 series ute B/B Chev and up to 40' tyres, never bothered with the std front diff as they break so easy especially in reverse. Still running standard axles front and rear with lockers , big stud and dowel conversion on front and rear hubs. I have broken one c/v and that was the end spline where it drive the hub (screwed it clean off) I was in high 2nd with 37's at 6000rpm and hit a 3ft vert enbankment with the wheel at traveling jogging speed, the wheel stopped so something had to let go. I have a good understanding of the limits of the drive train, if you drive smart you keep it on the limit you do well. If i get a big bounce and thats where most breakages happen, Im off the throttle momentarily as soon as its on the ground into to it again with out even clutching it.

sounds good overall
i currently have hilux diffs so the front diff centre prob does not concern me

what is the exact wms - wms meausurement on the 80 axles

Front ARB airloka centre gives superior crown strength as the ctr is solid all round so i hear.

63" about 8" wider than a stocko old school lux.
