Internal regulator for a 2f
hey
Is there an Alternator with a internal regulator that will fit a 2f?
The guy who had the 45 before me ripped out the wiring and i cant seem to hook the alt back up to the reg.
Thanks Tim

I am not sure if the alt on a 2h is the same as a 2f, but on my old 2h I found an internally regulated 130amp alternator that had the same bolt pattern and pulley position. Bolted straight in, only small mods to the wiring required. I will have a look tonight to see exactly what type it is and let you know. Didn't cost that much either from memory.
Has been working perfectly for about 4 years now.

yeah if you can find a part no on it that would be tops or even what car it came off. That way i can go into repco and compare it to the original. Part shops tend to look at you stupidly when you cant give them a part no.
failing that, maybe i could take the reg and alt to an auto elec and get him to connect it up.

The alternator is off of an N series Isuzu truck. The part number is ALT160502
The Australian supplier is "Auto Electrics Australia" see their web site.

I know this was easily fit to my 2H, but I am not sure if the alternator mountings on a 2F is the same. Hopefully someone else will pipe up and confirm it.
It is internally regulated.
It has a vacuum pump on the back but that can easily be taken off, or you might be able to get one without.
Hope this helps.

Hustly, the standard 40 series one is 50 amp and externally regulated.
the same Landcruiser Alt seems to fit:

i cant seem to get the http://www.aea.com.au/pinpoint/ site to work. Thanks anyway Sambo.
from a quick search it seems that an EA on might be the go so far. the bolt pattern seems similar.
fj40 one, ext reg, 50amp.
Ea one, int reg, 85 amp.

From further searching at www.exchangeautoparts.com.au/alternators.asp it seems that i could be able to butcher alternators from the following vehicles:
FORD FALCON 6 CYL XD, F SERIES TRUCK, BOSCH 55 AMP
FORD FAIRLANE ZK ZL 6CYL / FAIRMONT 6CYL / FALCON XE XF 6CYL / LTD FD FE, 50 AMP BOSCH TYPE W/7V TAP
FORD ALLOY HEAD CORTINA TE TF 77-81 6CYL 2L / FAIRLANE ZJ / FALCON XD / LTD / 55 AMP BOSCH TYPE
EARLY MAGNA TM 85-87 4CYL 2.6L 63V INT. REG. BOSCH TYPE
EARLY FORD MAVERICK DA 4.2L 88-93 / NISSAN PATROL MQ 4X4 2.8L 81-87, SKYLINE R30 EFI 81-86 2.4L 60A INT. REG. HITACHI TYPE
EARLY NISSAN SKYLINE R31 85-91 6CYL 3.0L RB30E ENGINE / HOLDEN VL 86-87 6CYL 3.0L 70A INT. REG. HITACHI TYPE BIRD CAGE
EARLY NISSAN SKYLINE R31 85-91 6CYL 3.0L RB30E ENGINE / HOLDEN VL 86-87 6CYL 3.0L 70A INT. REG. NISSAN TYPE BIRD CAGE
SUBARU LIBERY 89-94 MPFI 4CYL 2.2L EJ20 ENGINE 70A INTERNAL REG HITACHI TYPE
EARLY TOYOTA CORONA ST141 1983-1987 4CYL 2.0L 2S-C ENGINE 55A INT. REG. BOSCH TYPE
It seems that the Corona is a very close fit out of the lot.
The Ea one is 85 amp compared to the Corona one which is only 55amp
So I'll be going down to the parts shop sometime this week with the fj40 one and compare it to these.
In theory i will have to change the pully, grind either the mount or the Alt and change the wiring.
I'll let you know how i go.

Well after reading this it seems easy enough. info is all there.
im off to the wreckers to get an ea alternator.
Thanks for pointing me towards it Pcman. You can put this in your sig.
Pcman is probably the smartest man on Outerlimits.
Hope this helps anyone still running a 2f or a 3f.

thats the exact link that i used when i was looking for a alternator upgrade and working at a wreckers at the time meant i could get a alternator easy
when you buy the alternator make sure it has a long snout/thread where the pully bolts on as you may need to space the pully forward
ill get ya some pics of mine also i rand a new wire direct from the alternator to the battery totally removing all the 30+ year old 40 series wiring for the charging system
and infact im actually replacing this at the moment with some massive overkill 4 gauge cable

50A stock!! damn! no wonder my mattery died on a night drive wit the radios, and lights going!
Definitely need to upgrade mine then. The internal corona one is the same as the external unit which I have fitted to mine, I eye balled the mounts when I was looking for one.
How does the wiring in the car change when switching to internally regualted from external? Is it just cutting the external regulator out and connecting the wires ?
cheers

i figure that all you need to care about is 2 wires. one that charges the battery, and one that's for the charge light, if you have one.
yeah the best part about this is its internal reg so you can just cut your old one out.

ok update.
i've finished the swap albeit a dodgy bracket but i'll get to that later.
it works a teat. Only thing though, i could not find a 85 amp alt so i settled for a 65 or 70, i forget,. i had to go through a few different variations of pulley shims till i got it in the right spot.

vk7ybi - if you where sold that as a ea alternator you got ripped its a eb alternator they changed from a bosch unit to a mitsubishi
86slowsierra - yeah its a nice easy mod imo as for the bracket tc/d cortina early xa/b/c falcon ajuster is curved perfectly to give enough movement to use the standard size belt

I went to a Ford wrecker with the picture from this thread, came home with an alternator that looked identical to the one pictured, as I read here it woud work.. The alternator pictured has a ribbed pulley, the same as what I have thats no good to me.. The Toyota pulley does not change over..
The misinformation in this thread needs to be removed before someone else gets ripped..
Luckily for me its a direct bolt on upgrade on a Suzuki, so I will sell it to some zook owner and get my money back..
