Not sure if this is the right place, but here goes.

Im looking at buying a 1998 normally aspirated diesel poverty pack manual 80 series wagon with 180,000km on it.

A quick walk around it and a short test drive didn't reveal anything wrong, and it appears well looked after.

Whats a fair price?

What if anything goes wrong with them, apart from being slow?

How well do they take an aftermarket turbo?

Will a GXL dash with tacho etc fit straight in or are some changes/mods required to do this?

Thanks in advance

Pete

I've got a GXL with aftermarket turbo. Yes it will be much better with the turbo! No doubt about it, a lot less gear changing and thinking before hills.

Tacho dash will fit (physically), but you won't have the sensor on the fuel pump that gives you the RPM for the tacho to work.

Make sure the gearbox is nice and smooth, it doesn't jump out of gear and isn't too notchy in second. Try low range on some grass or gravel, lock the hubs first! Check the CV's aren't clicking at full lock. If you can, check it for oil blowby in the top breather hose. A little oil is okay but not too much and most of the time it's from overfilling the engine oil.

Have I missed anything?

Do a red book search for price.

So about $12,000 to 14,500

There is a couple of REALLY good threads on the sub fuel tank guage and making that go up the top and the tacho dash install. You will need the post 1993 electric (non-cable) dash.

Check the trip odometer and the fuel door cable, as they both play up, also the heater switch on the dash.

Other than that, I have one and they are a good (but very ugly) car.
