could be a couple of things.
air filter
fuel pump
air flow meter
Bit had to check fuel pump and air flow meter with out the right tools, but take the air filter out and run it to check that.

its probably your fuel pump.
to diagnose, you need a pressure guage for the fuel line, or a new pump :)

and if its the fuel pump is it alright to drive for awhile like this or replace it straight away?

far out where you going for work, do you use your own lube.......
the pump is like $150 ish fit your self. it is most likely the check valve in the pump is bypassing, this gives you this problem with injected 4.2 95% of the time. i would say dont drive.........

yeah we had this happen to an 06 territorry, it got progressivly worse, until it didnt drive at all when you put it in gear.

I fits your cat, it will slowly get worse, If you drive it, you will carbon up your combustion chambers... ( not detrimental and you can steam clean away the carbon it with small amounts of water down the intake, you MUST do this without the cat fitted though!!!!!)

If its your pump, and its runs ok under 3 grand, i cant see any reason why you cant keep driving it, at 3000rpm you are not going to lean out the engine and do damage to anything :D

reversing the polarity of the pump wires works sometimes to " flush " the pump.

as a side note, you can drive all you want with a busted pump if your patrol has LPG :D

i suppose if you payed 800$ for a pair of shocks on a weekend warrior patrol, you must not mind being raped to the tune of 1500 for an efi pump :D

I had a fue injectected nissan do this to me once, it was like the limiter was se at 3000 rpm, turned out to be the Throttle position sensor, had some water in the plug, gave it a blow out with compressed air and pluged it back in right as rain. maybe give all ya plugs on ya sensors a blow out and a wiggle, hope it helps.

yeah that too,

and another is a blocked Mass airflow sensor, ( covered in mud)
can also give similar symptoms.

if you pull the actual sensor out ( 2 philips head screws) and hit it with carby clean, t will probably fix it.
also check that the contacts are not corroded in the plug/sensor.
