Hilux Diff & Gearbox ratio's

just wondering wat different gearbox and diff ratio's came out between 1981 & 1988 in the petrol & Diesel hilux 4wd
i have a mate with a 253 in a 82 model lux and wanting to no wat he can change to get better fuel economy its running the standard 4 speed gearbox at the moment
any information is greatly appreciated
