hey guys,

i just got a stock 96 vitara.. was wondering, can i just use the normal tie-down points to tow people from or should i get a bullbar to use for that kind of thing? what is the best way to tow and get towed in a vitara swb?

ive also heard some people say its silly to tow from a bull-bar, but i dunno.. is it just if you attach it badly?

cheers

Paul

What a knob that ranger was!!!

Anyway ... don't recover with tie-down points either as they are just that ...tie-down points"!! They are not shock-rated - they are used ti tie cars down for shipping!
For the sake of your life, and your friends and family get proper rated recovery hooks fitted.
The red 'Outback Ideas' hooks are great. I think BBM or Snake Racing now distribute them.

What do you bolt them to on the front of a vitara stampy?

IMHO it's not about the rating of the hook, it's all about how its bolted to the car. The front of vitara chassis don't offer any obvious places without adding welded in crush tubes.

Towbars are OK for snatch recovery.

are you talking about towing or recovery points? Two very different things. Towing points aren't subjected to the same stresses as recovery points

I think Its all about the rating of the hook as it (the hook or loop) could have great welds/ bolts but if it is not shock rated to do a snatch recovery it should not be used.
And yes, towbars are fine too but not tow-balls as they are not shock rated either, but for static loads.

(serious question) are any hooks shock rated? How would you size anyhting for shock rating? Doesn't the SWL of lifting take into account shock load anyway, hence the reason SWL is about 1/6th of breaking load?

I'll still say there's no point having a hook rated for one bazillion KG shock rating if its attached to a 2.5mm thick chassis, single thickness.
