Install a normal gauge and a SPDT switch

Connect the common to the gauge positive and each battery to the each of the other terminals

That would work too... but he wants to be able to see both at once.

On a side note... would you use a dpdt switch and switch the earth aswell, and run +/- from each respective terminal to get a truer indication of battery health? or am i being to picky.

This may not meet Firesticks requirements, its based on a switch as mentioned above.

I picked up a regulated voltmeter from ebay for about $20 and wired it via a SPDT toggle switch to the batteries. The roof console in the cruiser turned out to be a great location. I like having the precise voltage displayed as compared to an analogue meter but the same switch will work with an analogue display.

Note that with the motor running your batteries are in parallel so there is no difference in the readings, but this may vary depending on your dbs cut in / cut out settings.
