This is my 1992 Defender 90, it is in stock condition bar some 32" light truck tyres.
I plan to do it up for some pretty serious weekend offroading.
Ill use this thread to keep you all updated on its progress.

Planned mods are a 2" coil lift, 10" ridepro shocks,Sams slotted bushes and 34" Jungle trekkers for a start. Then id say save for a 24 spline axle upgrade then lockers!

Anyway heres some pics, ill add more as they come!

Cheers!

Removed the defender stickers and got myself a bullbar :P

Bull bar is second hand, cost me $300. Better than a new one for $800 ;)

Personally, I'd do the axles before the tyres, or the axles will do themselves.......

I was thinking that too but seeing as how this is my first landy, i have never expierienced a broken axle so it doesnt strike me as one of the first things i should do.
However after doing a lot of reading on this forum it seems to be a major weak point in the drive train.
So yeah, i may do the axles before the tyres!

Expensive things these landrovers ;)

If you have 10 splines. The rear diff will explode first. As a minimun, get a 4 pin diff with 24 spline shafts in the rear.......

If it is a factory V8 or ex-MOD, you should have 24 spline and 4 pin in the rear.

I have seen a 1998 HSE 4.6 after it's rear diff 'exploded' not driving very hard either.....

and....

my other mate has a 94 3.9V8 2 door disco that had a front diff explode!!
left a 50 c hole in the housing..... fark!!!!! have photos some where words can't explane the mess it made in side the housing.... scary shit!!!

and none of these rovers ever see any offroad!!!

Yes they do tend to do that 10 splines, especially when you fit an rear air locker and stir!!!!!!!!!!

Got 18 months on my first set with 31's and they lasted 3 weeks and 2 trips with 32's! Amazing how a bit more diamiter can break axles. I still suspect that they were fatigued months before and 32 inch MT/R's were the last straw.

Trav

If you buy tyres first. just dive a bit easier and be careful when you put the loud pedal down! you may be suprised, they might just last 6 weeks!!!!

Not me personally... I have, however, seen many 10 spline rear diffs go bang on stock vehicles that are usually driven lightly. When I was in the Brissy LR club, it seemed one would go at every weekend event. The stock 24 spline 2 pin diffs and shafts break also, but it take a fair bit more effort.

Of my Rovers, the Disco had Maxidrive in rear. My current Rover is a D90. It is ex-MOD and thus has a stock 4 pin rear diff with 24 splines. Fronts are/were stock, so the front diff or inner axles should be the first things to let go.

The most common reason for single pin diffs to break (especially on trucks that haven't been offroad much) if when one of the circlips that retain the pin comes loose and drops off, then the pin tries to leave the hemisphere and the spider gears try to walk. It is probably more common for this to occur than the pin breaking.

Been a while since i updated this thread.

Havent done anything to my truck but i have been doing a bit of wheeling.

Here are some pics from the easter wknd taken on the blowering dam foreshore. With the dam on 10% there is literally acres of mud and rockcrawling.

Will update again very soon got heaps more pics of this area.

Its actually a winch extension strap to get me away from the mud, but for the purposes of the story i called it a snatch strap.
Didnt think anyone would call me on it :D
