BJ 74 water sedimenter/fuel filter

Hi All!!
I was doing some reading on diesel fuel systems and noticed that part of the maintainance schedule was to empty the water sedimenter as well as change the fuel filter. I changed to fuel filter no worries but couldn't find the sedimenter. I would assume that all diesel engines would have one to filter the fuel. Does anyone here know if the 13-bt has a water sedimenter? Any info would be great!! Wanna keep the BJ running sweet.

I have the same model as you have I don't know were it is there is only 1 thing that don't know what its for and that is round cylinder at beside the air filter.

hi mate,
Yep, thanks for that. I've located the sedimenter. It's for taking water and crap out of the fuel before it gets to the injectors. It's got a sensor in it thats hooked up to the filter light in the dash. If the light comes on it's probably full of crap.
I'm gonna have a go at draining it on the weekend. I've never done it and I don't know when it would have been done last. I reckon u have to take it off the bracket and unsrew the bottom bolt and drain it into a jar. Then fill it with clean fuel put the drain bolt back in and put it back on the bracket.
I haven't done it but this is probably the easier way to do it.

Thats pretty much it. I had to replace mine as it had rusted from the inside and allowing air into the fuel system.

could you do a some photos my light hasen't come on but it would be good to know for me if it does

hi mike,
I think the sedimenter should be serviced once a year. Apparently if the light comes on it's to late and water might make it past the sedimenter. Also the light might come on at an inconvenient time. I'll see how I go posting some photos of the procedure. I'm no mechanic tho but it seems like straight forward job. Check back after the weekend mate.

There is a bolt in the bottom of it?
10mm from memory, justy undo it and drain off the crud/dirt/mud and water and bang it back on and bleed it up.
On the 40 its down beside the chassis, and you can get to it wasy as, on the 75 you can still get to the bolt on the bottom, its just harder.

Ive had the sensor come on in my brothers 4runner, and it ran okay for a bit, bled it out when we got home.. But yeah..

Hey roids,
Yep it's got the bolt in the bottom of it. Pretty hard to get to it on mine as it's right on the drivers side wheel arch. How do you bleed it? Or do you just fill up through the top bolt?

cos you've drained the sedimenter you'll have to remove the air out of the fuel system..
(for 3b) get a 17mm and crack the top nut on the injector.. crank it until diesel starts to come from it.. then do it back up.. do it for each injector and your fuel system should be bled then..

the filter light also comes on when your glowing on some models. also if its on while your bj is running it means your voltage regulator could be stuffed (replace internal fuse might fix it)..
my sedimeter is under the passanger floorpan attached to the outside of teh chassis rail.. has a plug and 2wires going to it..
i have this as well as another type of fuel filter in the engine bay.. would this much overkill be normal?
(the cylinder type thing on top of the air hose)
this usually is plumbed in before the primer pump..

Yep.... thats the stuff I got out of the sedimenter. Mostly diesel, some brown rusty looking gunk and some black chunks. Didn't seem to bad but better out than in as they say.
One of the BJ... I love my ride.
