noticed my mates zook was clunking 2day when taking off. checked it out and there is mega slop in the shaft that enters the diff.
would this be the pinion bearing? if so do u acess the bearing from the inside of the centre or can u acess it from the same side as the pinion seal?

ok first thing to check is to unbolt your tailshaft from the diff.
behind the end of the tailshaft there will be a big nut. use a punch to bent the lock tab out and chock the wheels and swing off it bith a breaker bar to make sure if it is tight.
if this does nothing you may be able to have bearing replaced or you mite be better off getting a new centre if you dont want a dodgey fix. my mate will prob end up replacing the bearing and welding the centre as there will be no slop where the gears are worn.
are you leaking oil past the pinion seal or not?

my diff is only leaking oil through the bungs. fill and drain.

ok. my mates wasnt leaking either. but we suspect that the seal held up because the oil had alredy leaked out.lol
we will find out 2moro if it is cheaper to replace the bearing and reset the backlash or to find a full new centre.

i priced a centre from a wrecker and he quoted me 400 bucks. i passed on that one. let us no how you go tho as my clunk is really annoying me.

thats a bit rought. the wreckers down here aint much better. they quoted me mate the stock rear bumper with lights 250 bucks. if your zook is just a toy a dodgeyish repair mite be the go.

hey mate. my mates diff was fairly rooted. there was no oil left in it and it seemed the previous owner only had grease in it. also lots of water in it.
he basicaly had to buy a new centre. and you are correct he payed 400 for 1. now if i was you id rip your centre out and take it to your mechanic and see what damage has been done. u may be able to get away with just a new bearing. sorry for the bad news mate. hope that helps and you get out of it cheap.

If you drive a car for any time with a loose pinion the ring and pinion will be damaged- The wear pattern will be all over the shop and it won't be possible to set the contact pattern up properly again.

It is basically not possible to just crank the nut up harder and assume all will be OK. In theory, every time you re torque the pinion nut you need a new crush sleeve which sets the preload on the bearings, however, it might be possible to get way with it if you re torque to spec. However, if it's been loose long, the diff gears will be worn anyway and the diff will be noisy and have a short life.

However, the real problem is the crush sleeve in the first place. These collapse if overloaded creating the problem in the first place. Lockers and gears can cause the overload condition.

It is possible to have the crush sleeve replaced with a solid spacer. It's a mod a number of us have had done here in Vic. The pinion should hold its preload properly once the spacer is installed.

Getting a price from a wrecker for a suzuki diff is just nuts. they charge the same for a patrol diff as they do for a suzuki diff. Depending on ratio you can pick up sierra diffs on here quite frequently for under $150.

Hell even ive got a few spares.

dont pay the 400 just put an add in the wanted section..

yes wreckers are a rip off. but me mate is just typical him and wants it fixed asap. thx for the advice anyways
