wondering if there is a best model salisbury diff housing to use as a dana60 build up? the axle tubes arn't a consideration as they will be replaced.
edit: oh and it will be for a rear diff if that matters, on another thing are there any high pinion centre sections available OEM in austraila? f250 late model perhaps?

Sounds like you will be replacing most bits anyway??? In that case, a Series 3 sals will be the cheapest. I picked up a complete one for $200 on here.
Land Rover Rear Sals were:
Series 3
1971-1983
55" WMS
4.7:1 ratio
Low Pinion
6-gear centre
24 spline 1.24" axles
Series 3 - STAGE 1 (V8/Isuzu Diesel)
1980-1983
55" WMS
3.54:1 ratio
Low Pinion
6-gear centre
24 spline 1.24" axles
110/Defender
1984-2002
61" WMS
3.54:1 ratio
Low Pinion
6-gear centre
24 spline 1.24" axles
Changed to disc brakes about 1993
101 Forward Control
mid 70's - late 80's ??? Military only - RARE IN OZ.
65" WMS
5.57:1 ratio
Low Pinion
6-gear centre
21 spline 1.47" axles
Drum brakes, 6-stud hubs.
The centre casing is the same on all.
Sorry, can't help on F-truck stuff. Maybe PM Crushu.

yes very much so replacing all the bits only want the centre casting.
Was worryed that there were 2 diffrent casting with pinion postion diffrence?
thanks ISUZUROVER

The ring gear flange position on the hemisphere is the only thing that changes. 4.3 and numerically lower and 4.5 and numerically higher are the two different ones.
If you want a CIG locker (probably not), you can fit 35spl side gears to a salisbury centre then weld it up.

Why not just start with a Dana 60 if thats what you really want and are going to scrap the rest anyway ?

priced a Dana 60 housing lately? Not much use starting with one any way as all the internals from it also will be upgraded.

If all you want is a bare housing i can send you one of each for a carton of piss each....ono.
The D60 is a low pinion out of the front of an OKA and the salisbury also a low pinion out of a series 3 landy.
You pay the freight.
As I understand it all the castings (D60 and salisbury) have the same pinion offset. The difference in ratio is handled by the carrier..so you just got the buy the correct air locker to suit the gears you want to run.
The difference you may be thinking off is the Dana 61 which, I believe, the housing was setup with a different offset which limits the gears you can run...or somehting like that. But I doubt you would find a d61 in Aust.
High pinion...maybe a current model f250.

XXXX gold will do.
What diff ratio are you wanting to run...it may be cheaper to get a good complete diff if its a stock ratio.
So if you were after somehting like 4.7, 3.54 you would be better off getting a good salisbury. I think d60s might come in 4.1, 4.56 and maybe 4.88 standard. Ive got a number of a bloke that does secondhand d60 stuff that maybe a cheaper way to go.
If you want somehting more odd ball and need aftermarket gear then a bare housing will do.

looking at building them with 4.56, maybe the bloke with dana 60 parts is the way to go.
could you please PM me the number if your do want to advertise it.
