generaly speaking, they are no good offroad. they have no transfer case, and i dont think the new ones come with a center diff lock. and you have bugger all in the way of aftermarket accesories for them.
they are great if all you want to do is rally drive dirt roads tho!!! i have had a world of fun in one on gravel roads and padocks!

A mate of mine had one and we did Rainbow beach and Freshwater track no problems. I wouldn't take one to Landcruiser Park though.

My fiancee has a rav4 and goes great but i wouldn't take it serious offroading. They're great cars

You may as well jack up a celica 4wd same running gear minus the turbo and power
good car but a car is what they are if you try and use them as a 4x4 proper you will be asking for trouble

This is interesting on offroad.com

But yeah I agree with the above comments they make a good car for a bit of gravel road/light beach work but anything more they will struggle.

Amanda, the rav4 is a pretty good car actually for a AWD
the models upto and including the 1999 represent great value for a small package.
i have a 99 SWB and a 96 SWB winter ( leather interiour power everything) and just got a a 95 LWB because the missus wants 2 more doors.
The body on them is built very solidly, they have a good engine and gearbox. I could not rate them highly enough!
as a very light duty AWD to start out with it woudl be fine, as they have bugger all suspension travel.

the new rav4's do have a centre diff lock in the 2 upper spec models....for all terrain touring and some mild bush tracks no problem.
they can go through alot more than their looks give them credit for.

The missus has a 2005 cv sport 2 door. The car is bloody fantastic, nice to drive and for a 2.4 litre 4 cylinder has plenty of poke. The removable seats in the rear are awesome for fitting extra equipment in for weekend camping trips, it even fits the 80 litre engel in the back with room for more. The only thing wwe don't do with it is take it off road, that's what the surf is for. All in all a great little vehicle that both the wife and myself look forward to driving.

But it's not on a patrol chassis. It's actually, sorta, still a monocoque.
Probably the most impressive piece of 4WD fabrication I've ever seen.

If I was you I'd be looking more towards a Suzuki Vitara / Sierra or a Daihatsu Feroza. Still a small car but more capable off road.

my mates mrs has an early rav4. we've had it on the beach etc.
but they just dont last if you use them offroad. hers has all sorts of noises etc after only a few offroad excursions.
or treat yourself, buy a FJ40!

hey amanda,
there is a jimny for sale in queensland on the forum at the moment which looks pretty tidy and i think would be ideal for what you're after if it's not too steep.
