I am wanting to swap my head lights for ones which take a H4 globe dose any other car use these lights? want to get them from a wrecker just need to know what car to look for

Would like to upgrade my headlights for the trip to Perth ... will have a set of Lightforce XGT's and Striker 170's to help out but good standard headlights never go astray.

if u want something that works and not wank crap.

go to ARB or similar and get some IPF 7" round inserts and upgrade the wiring to the globe and incude a realay in there and do 90/130w or 55/100w

and fit a decent set of spotlights too, but for most things the headlight upgrade was great.

i think th early pajeros hav 7" round other wise early mazas and datsuns

I am getting a pair of 7" round SEALED BEAM Halogens from Toyota.
They are sealed so won't ever leak and are halogen so are nice and bright.
They came standard on the 78 ??? series troopy and ute (the last one with round lights).
About $50 each.

yes its great to be able to replace the globes with brighter ones but its a pain looking at your new light full of muddy water and rust.
do they make a 130w/ 90w sealed 7"

Sprints have just quoted me $15 each for Philips 90/130W H4 globes, and $22 each for Projecta 7" inserts.

They had sealed beam also but only went up to 70W which is a bit meh.

Am awaiting a call back on some IPF inserts but expect them to be $120ish based on some 5.5" Hella's I saw in Autobarn over the weekend.

So reckon I'll go the Projecta's + 130W H4's ... $74 ain't bad. Have got a new loom made up already so will chuck that in too.

Question: My Lightforce spotties are rated 100W and are nominally 12V, but with the alternator running the system's powered to 14V. Does that mean they're pulling 8.3A each (100W/12V) or 7A each (100W/14V)? Wondering if I can run a set of Striker 170's and a set of XGT's (400W total) off one 30W relay....

i got some 55/75w sealed beam light from hella. the stock lights are ok for around town but for bush driving nothing beats a decent set of spot/flood driving lights.

Get 14.4 volts to sealed beams, you will be amazed at how brite they are.
130's suck they run to hot and blow easily. also leads to cracked headlights (hot glass and cold water do not mix well)

100/55's are a good compromise. Buy the best bulbs you can afford (not all H4's are equal) From memory phillips made quite good ones.

100W is the maximum allowed by law so I doubt you'll find 130/90's.
I had a set of 130's(H4's) in my Falcon ute and apart from using more power found very little difference to 60/55's. The reflector can't handle double the light intensity.

no point getting whiz bang globes etc if you haven't upgraded the pathettic wiring loom. Upgrade the headlight loom first and you'll be amazed by that difference then upgrade the lights as well. The quality of light is much more important than the amount. Nothing worse than horrible yellowish headlights, long stint driving with that sort of light leads to fatigue, but a nice crisp white light is much better for your eyes

any one no where to get an upgraded headlight loom from? iv fitted phillips 55/60w and ther the 80% more light ones ,there heeps better than standed and are a nice white light.

another option if you can read a diagram and use a test light is to have a search on these forums for MARTs headlight wiring diagram. Very easy to follow, or you could just PM to see if he still has them.

Yup, guys at Sprints told me the same. They sell Narva 130/100W globes but highly recommend they NOT be used for headlights. Ended up buying some Narva Blue Power 60/55W H4's (+80% supposedly). ADR compliant which is the main thing.

Mart's headlight wiring diagram is the go. Just be aware that Supercheap no longer sell the relays Mart used - you can get single 30A relays with fuses from Jaycar for about $8 each though.

Checked voltage drop on the standard loom last night - had 14.5V across battery at idle, 14.0V from battery negative to high beam feed on back of H4 connector, but only 12.5V between the H4 ground and high beam feed. Only 0.5V voltage drop over the positive feed, but 1.5V voltage drop over the ground return!



So looks like even if you can't be stuffed making up a whole new loom, you'd be well served by running a 25A cable from the negative terminal on the back of your lights to the battery negative post. That alone should show a significant improvement.

Didn't think of running a flylead from the light to the battery to get some instant measure of how much luminance can be gained by improving the ground return - will do tonight and post a photo if there's noticeable improvement.

Okay here's 12.5V std loom vs 14V earthed direct to battery. Single headlight, D1 globes (weird round things) rated at 45/40W.

Aaaaaand the clincher ... H4 65/60W at 12.5V vs 14V. No question upgraded wiring with upgraded globes provides a massive improvement in night-time visibility.
