SD33 vs L28??

Hey guys picked up a parts car for my shorty mainly for the 35"s and winch bar that were on it.. But its a L28 petrol that was apparently rebuilt not so long ago and just driving it up and down my street im impressed with the power it has over the diesel so considering swapping out my non turbo SD33 (24volt) for the L28.. Am i mad? has anyone else done it? is it hard to do?

also are the radiators the same cos my sd33 one is brand new..

keep the diesel... it will go forever, and it will actualy pull harder when it comes down to the tough stuff. it also just idles everywhere in the bush where you would be revin the l28

love my sd33T chip burner, slow but man itll use half the fuel of most cars out bush, then you can save even more by installing a deep fryer

had the diesel now got the l28 diesel better off road for slow crawling stuff but if its mud your after go the l28 they rev out like crazy and cheap to re-build if you rev it that little too hard

my mate had mq wagon with l28 went like stink did more than the speedo could show over 200km/h on 33inch muddys and dident use to much fuel either. only problem was diffs and axles broke.

I think you should go L28,but thats just 'cos i'd buy the sd33! The SD33 would have made a good tank motor,even still i wouldn't part with mine.Not really into 'power' or 'acceleration' these days,but i know this ute'll still be going long after i've karked it! It's slow and sluggish but it still gets better fuel economy than some of the c.r.diesels.....no chips or computers to burn out,runs on chip oil and a seriously staunch motor.Plus it's not worth the head funk to change all the gear anyhoo..... :?:

Yeah ive decided to keep the SD33, not worth the hassle.. decided the only reason i was considering it was to get rid of the 24 volt electrical system! But ill just have to live with the 24v till i get a 12v turbo diesel donor car..

whats wrong with 24v?? whack a small inverter under the bonnet(if it doesnt already have one) and you can still run whatever you want.

Anyone ever seen or heard of a race between a sd33T and a l28, i heard that a sd33T killed the l28??????? any truth to this?

wouldnt surprise me. i could drag off more than my fair share of cars in my n/a sd33... they can get along surprisingly quickly if you learn how to drive em right...

Yeh i am just on my p's now macca i think i drive the sd33 pretty quick but how you drive yours? mines a 4 speed by the way

lol i had a turbo l28 that would have blown any of the sd33's.

lots of preformance parts out there for l28's to really make them move!!

how many L28s came from the factory turbo????

i had a cordia that would pull a 12 second quater, but it doesnt mean all cordias will ;)

i dont drive mine at all now... its been retired to another MQ nut's backyard... mine was a 4spd also, and once you work out just when to shift those boxes, and learn to double shift quickly, you will give those boys in their falcorroladoors a bit of a shock... the low first gear in it means you will take them off the line everytime, and after some practive you will stay infront at least till the speed limit (we dont speed now do we boys... :D )

neither does an L28 if you put skyline EFI on it.
i'd also like to see a sd33 do 7000rpm, and before you ask, i've seen stock L28 do it

Haha nah never do we speed thats a bad thing to do and against the law macca :lol:, yeh i was so suprised when i got my mq how hard it could pull off the line, quick question what else can i do to my stock sd33 to gain a bit more grunt???

does an sd33 need to rev out too 7000rpm?? at no stage did i ever think 'hmmm i wish i could rev harder...'


getting more grunt, off the top of my head i can only think to wind a lil more fuel into it. take it easy tho, coz too much aint always a good thing. (much like tryin to rev out to 7k ;)

never said you need to, was merely pointing out that saying an SD33 will rev harder is a not right.

an L28 doesn't need to either, but it can if you want it to.

How much fuel macca or how much of a turn on the little screw?

it will rev harder in that it wont kill it by putting your foot flat to the floor. put you foot flat to the floor in ya l28 for a min or so and ill bet something will start makin the wrong sorta noises...


from memory, i think you only want to start turning it about an 8th of a turn at a time... it doesnt need much

Spend a little $ and get the injectors cleaned and get it tuned on a dyno, Never done it to mine but i think you would be very suprized at just the injectors.
I nice sppray pattern will give you a more complete burn= Meaning more bang for your buck.

Yeh when i first got my mq it was blowing blue smoke, found out injectors needed to be replaced, so they cleaned it all, new nozzels ect, would they tune it on the dyno using the injector pump or tuning through the injectors?
