turbos??

hi all
i am new to the turbo world and just learning about them
i undrestand the consept of how they work and just have a few qs
can i ru a turbo on dule fule (tb42) petty gas?
if yes \ no then why?
how much am i looking at to buy the parts?
is it something i can learn as i go to fit myself or is there no room for errors?
are there any kits avalable for the tb4.2 and are they any good?

First up, i know the whingers are going to hate it but...
Have you tried searching the forum?? Do yourself a favour and spend a few hours reading up on what other people have done. Turbocharging a TB42 has been covered as many times as "fitting 35's to a GQ".

Yes, you can do both, but you will get better results running either LPG or petrol as the different fuels require different ignition timing/compression/general setup etc etc etc.

It depends how much you know, and how important it is to not ruin your motor. Petrol engines require a bit more care compared to diesels, but generally i'd say if you are half mechanically minded - have a crack!!!

I dont know of any "off the shelf" kits, but nearly all performance/turbo workshops will have done one already, or will make one to suit.

I take it that there are one million and one different combos for setting these things up!

There is 100 different ways to do it. Like i said, put aside a few hours and troll through the forum.
There's threads on here from Grade A racing setups right through to povo-pack backyard hack jobs.
Plus, by reading through the other build threads, you can find out what issues other people had, what turbo's they used etc etc etc.
Its all here!
Also, the search function requires a certain touch for it to work properly. For example, for your question i would type "turbo AND TB42" (exclude quotation marks), set the forum to NISSAN and then go for it.

Both have pro's and cons.
Highmount: easier to set up (less bending over), oil drain setup easier, intake plumbing easier. BUT, cant use top mount intercooler as the turbo creates too much heat to make it feasible.
Lowmount: tucks away all nice and neat, can use either top or front mount intercooler, looks more factory, aftermarket turbo manifolds can be had fairly cheap. BUT, bit more involved plumbing oil/water lines, less room to work on, bit more intake plumbing involved.

i read that carby and efi are inter changeable tb42
so would a factory tb42 turbo kit bolt on?
are they obtainable?
or for the cost would i be better off doing my own?
that is would it cost me the same to buy a factory one and up grade it
as to start from scrach?

factory EFI manifold, GRA gas mixer, factory diesel turbo mani, and turbo of your choice.
If I was to own a patrol again thats how I'd go about it on a budget.

No such thing as a factory TB42 turbo kit i'm afraid. You're not getting TD42 and TB42 mixed up are ya? TB is petrol, TD is diesel.
Turbo manifolds are interchangeable between TD42/TB42/TB45 engines. So, for example, you could get a manifold for a TD42, and then bolt it onto a TB42 (which a lot of people do).
First off, you need to decide what fuel you are going to use. If its petrol, get a TB42E setup (fuel injected). This will offer the best power and economy for a petrol turbo setup.
FIRST OFF - if you dont already have it, GET ELECTRONIC IGNITION!! Read up on here what people have fitted (brands/types etc). This is an absolute MUST for any performance or forced induction engine.
Unless you are cashed up, you're better off doing your own kit, and making it to suit your car and driving style. Its not hard - there are many OL members that have already done the hard work for you on here.

T4 turbo too. Plenty of hi-po trucks and comp trucks using this setup.
I have the same sort of setup on my 180B. LPG has a higher RON too, which allows for slightly more boost before pinging.

Those turbo manifolds were $500 alone werent they - the bulk deal done recently?

A "proper" manifold will cost from $350 minimum. But as per above, a "J" pipe cost is minimal. You would b surprised to know how many people use these setups, as it requires minimum tools and parts, and almost any hack can do it!

i got a log manifold priced and it was $350 to $650

Im thinking this will be the first step
2nd electronic ignition
Then turbo the hell out of it
