iv seen a few people running pod filters on there zooks, are thay any better than the original filter? give more power? or do people just put them on for looks?
cheers Scott.

Pod filters go in the same category as 6" mufflers hanging out the back, carbon fibre gear knobs and clip on pedal covers... pure wank factor.

thanks jas, thought thay were for the wank factor only, but wasn't sure.
cheers Scott.

The only way to improve air cleaner efficiency is to fit a larger air cleaner..
You can NEVER go TOO large with filters.(air, oil or fuel) You can easily go too small though.

What is the filter material in those pods, pleated paper or oiled foam?

Most of the ones I've seen have been pleated paper with cloth over the top then a fine steel mesh.
You can get decent "Finer Filter" types but they are more suited to bikes or boats than cars.

Depends - oiled gauze, foam, even stainless mesh are common.
The tech on pod and K&N filters has been covered extensively on here (search for K&N in Chit Chat and ISUZUROVER as the author)
Basically, they generally filter poorly. 99% of the claims for them are all about added hp and efficiency, but they don't talk about how well they filter compared to the factory air box.
The basic rule of thumb is as per Want33's - if you want better performance from your inlet, fit a filter element with a larger surface area. this will improve flow without reducing filtration performance. It might even imrove both simultaneously.
I have seen the amount of visible dust a K&N will let past, even on a large, well serviced element. Paper for me thanks - I'm looking at a 1980's hiace filter for my car - it's a lot like a little donaldson cyclopac - a very nice design.

Also look for deeper filter elements as they provide more surface area within the same length and width.

I've found this to be a good reference, even though it applies to another engine but it illustrated the point nicely. I'm sure it's posted elsewhere here but...

Whilst its not necessarily the case that the ac delco element tested there has qualities that hold across their entire range I'm looking at getting one brought in from the US for my Vit (the part is not listed in the Oz catalogue)
I'm more concerned about my filter catching the dust than air getting through but I'm impressed that the ac delco out performs 1/2 of the filters tested at 50% of its capacity but let through the least amount of the test dust

AC Delco is GM's parts arm (Kinda like Motorcraft to Ford) so it's likely that the AC Delco part for for a vitara is manfactured to exactly the same as the factory suzuki part.
Vitaras were sold as Chevrolet Geo Trackers in the US and US Chev dealers parts come via AC Delco - that's the only reason you could buy a vitara filter in an AC delco box.
I'd just buy factory genuine suzuki it's likely to perform exactly the same as the AC delco part.

on my last car - the feroza I swapped in a unifilter foam type filter into the standard airbox location and it made a noticeable difference to performance (improvement).
Does anyone know the best / cheapest performance filter recplacement for the factory airbox in a 1.6 efi vitara?

Your standard filter is the same one that the Factory decided was good enough to flow enough air for the GV V6 engines so unless you have amazing amounts of boost I think you'll be fine with it although the standard intake piping to the airbox doesn't help much so that could be improved, making a snorkel not a bad idea.

standard filter eh... are you talking about a ryco or something like that? where is the cheapest place for this kinda stuff?
snorkels... do they give less restriction or more air restriction? because the air has to travel further..
also, are there any cheap snorkel kits? whats the best way to do it on a vitara? can I get a snorkel head from a truck to increase airflow?

Some interesting home fabricated snorkels here!
