eng transplant ideas

Hi all new to toyota world been nissan man all my life, but now
I have a 77 hj45 3.6 lt dsl (H motor) tray back, looking to do transplant, what eng and / or trans conversion is best suited / the simplest.

4.2 lt, 5 lt, holden or v6 holden mabey, or 12HT dsl (bit expensive) any help and ideas would be greatly appreciated.
dont want to race it just go camping fishing

poor bugger, you went the wrong way :)

but in support of your decision i have a 2H diesel troopy and sold my 45 trayback not long ago :D

you cant go past a dual fuel small block chev for simplicity, serviceability and economy.
i have them all in all sorts of 40 series trucks
i had a b diesel 40, had a 3f 45, i have a couple 3b's 42's, couple 2f 40's
,a 2h troopy, 302 windsor 40, a couple 307 chev 40's
also a 350 chev 40

best ones for any 40/47 series trucks are the 307chev ( preference) and 302 windsor.

with 3.7's in the diffs, you cannot go past a 307 chev! its BLISS.

< flame suit on> forget the holden motors, i woudlent piss on a holden block if it was on fire. :P

i have a 76 hj 45 with 350 chev and turbo 400 auto in it,as well as a 40 with a 327 chev,on gas thats what i like,im going to part out the ute down the track and steal the motor for my seized hj60 ute conversion project,and bung the auto into the old fj 40,conversions can all be expensive if someones doing them for you

i would go for a 350 chev or lexus or look for a crashed 60 with a 12h-t a mate pick up a crashed 60 with a mint 12h for about a grand nz dollars about 1 third the price of an engine

i would rate a 1UZ if you didnt mind computers :)

although you can get a carby manifold for them.. OR
just run straight gas through the origional intake,then all you need is something to drive the spark :D
but adapters would be worth alot more than what you can get for a 40 series to chev conversion second hand.

again for simplicity :)

307 chev ( i reakon bigger is overkill for a camping truck)
powerpack heads
hardened seats
mercruiser ( or any marine ) camshaft
hei dizzzy
gear reduction starter
single plane manifold
spreadbore holley ( with mecanical secondaries for easy economy mode)
impco 425 with L series converter
if you want auto run a th350 ( saps less power than a 400)
3.7's in the diffs.
dont forget to run a chev clutch fan and COWL it to the factory radiator.

if you end up putting a chev in it, try not to use the engine mount plate the mounts to the front of the motor directly under and around the timing chain cover. The only plus to this mount is you use factory toyota chassis mounts and engine mount rubbers.
The big downside is you cannot mount a sawginaw power steering pump in the origional location!

i've always toyed with the idea of a 1fz-fe or 1hdt from an 80 series, but using the gearbox and trans from the 80 as well.

rolled or otherwise fawked 80 series = not much. everything needed for eng/gearbox is there, and then sell the leftover bits.

nfi if it'd fit tho

what sort of price you looking at? doing the work yourself?

i just put a 1HZ in my 40 shorty for about 2k including the motor, pretty happy with it too. good way to go if you want to keep it diesel.

you get the 80 series 5 speed that way, and the crawl ratios are way better than anything 40
