Electrical problem G13BA Sierra. Possibly Dizzy?

I went through a creek crossing in my Sierra and when i got back out of water i stopped for a bit and it idled fine for a couple of minutes, but when i went to take off it wouldn't rev past 2000rpm or so, engine kept cutting out.
(This has happened twice before, once through another creek crossing, but it fixed itself after 20-30 seconds, and once when i washed the engine bay which i fixed by spraying everything with WD)
I removed leads, one at a time and distributor cap and coil lead and give all a good spray with WD40. Started it up again and it would idle ok, but not rev properly still.
So i remove everything again, and wipe it all clean, and give another spray.
Try to start it again, and it wouldnt start at all. There is no spark. I checked every plug and wire and everything is where it was.
There was a mechanic in our club who gave it a check over and he believes its the distributor, but he only had very basic tools to check with.
What i want to know is:
1) How can i check that it definately IS the distributor before i buy a replacement?
2) How can i check if the coil is still working as it should?
3) If it is the dissy thats the problem, which other vehicles have the same part. (eg. Swift, Barina, etc) to give me more options when ringing wreckers.
4) Also, there are two wires coming from the distributor, a yellow and a black wire. They BOTH connect to the negative post on the coil. The guy who checked it out seems to think that one should go to the -ive post and one to the +ive post. Is this right? So far it has ran fine as is.
Thanks in advance for your help.
