Outer Limits 4x4 Board

hi guys,

The brake shoe retainer springs, adjuster and other misc parts associated with my drum brakes need replacing on my 1984 BJ42. THe rear drum has a single brake cylinder on the rear.

Can anyone advise where I can source a replacement spring kit?

do the 60's have the same drum brakes as mine? so I can try and source a kit for that instead of the BJ42? I've tried Checkpoint and sunshine state 4wd and i'm about to try toyota now..

worse case I'll have to get it from a wreck but would prefer not to.

Hey Andy, assume you havent got the drum off yet.




When you get it off you'll have a better idea of what you need. The dud adjuster (52) is the root of your problems. As it is seized, you cant back it off to get the drum off and its likely your drum has a wear lip making it even harder to get it past the shoes. As you wind the drum off using 2 bolts in the threaded holes, the drum is pulling the shoes way from the backing plate and putting alot of pressure on the hold-down cups (48). This will eventually tear the thin section of steel on the cup that holds it onto the pin (17), causing the springs (18) to rattle free.

So having said that I dont think you're ging to need new springs, just a couple of new cups. If the cups on the inside of the spring (sit against the shoe) are any good you can just swap them around and use the worn ones there as they only seat the spring.

You can usually clean out and lubricate the adjuster with an anti-seize and call it done but if its really stuffed then you should be able to get one from Toyota, possibly aftermarket. Not sure if its the same as 60 though, quite likely.

Pretty sure Repco sell those hold-down cups if you need some but not the springs or the adjuster.

I had a chat to sunshine state 4wd and toyota and they do the parts but seperately.. also the wreckers could help sourcing the parts.. but only 2nd hand used parts. I 'll try repco for the new cups..

currently I have parts 17(*2) and 48(*4) out (fell out when I tried to get to the brakes on sunday night) and the rest is just floating around. I have had the adjuster off when I replaced the rear brake pads ages ago and gave it a clean up but I think it's had it now.

I might try and source as many parts as I can and give it to a brake place to do. I assume they'll be able to do some work on the drum if a lip has been created due to wear? I had so much trouble trying to get it off and would rather pay for it to be someone elses problem.

Yeah if the drum is within tolerance it can be machined to remove the lip.

Part number on the cup is 072-014739, order ahead as it will probably have to come from their central warehouse at the Airport, woudn't be a common part at alot of stores. They are a couple of bucks each so you might want to get some spares.

andy i thought terrain tamer/sunstate 4wd/don kyatt (whoever they are!) have a spring kit and/or individual springs listed on their parts catalogue under 60 series (I think your would be the same - Rays pic is my 60 series brakes)

shorty forty, try NQ 4x4 and crash up here in Cairns, ask for Wayne. (he will probably know all the part numbers off the top of his head) I am sure he will be able to supply you with a kit that has all the parts in it you need, rather than getting them separate. I am sure he will be able to organize freight also.

Got a kit from DOn Kyatt's (sunshine state 4wd).. Part no. HBK1 .. its full of springs and has the spring cups too... got some adjusters while i was there.. should be it I hope.. will find out later today.

so the kit has everything needed? how much?

next pay should see me getting all that crap too!

ANyone know where I can find the part # 50 in the diagram? I've busted one of mine and need to track down a replacement.. I'll check out don Kyatts website now and see if its listed..

I'm assuming it would be this part: Wire H/brake Rear R/h & L/h - Part #:47616-60010

Confirming with Don Kyatt's now and it looks like its the right part.. except there doesnt appear to be any in the country.. hmm!

part # 50 is called "intermediate cable" for the drum brake. so go to the same catalogue page as above but search handbrake parts in stead of wheel parts....

i was quoted around $10 i think
