1989 diesel 2.8L lux.
about a week ago when i started the ute and it reved up slightly then immediately settled down to idle. didnt think much of it.
this happened each start up getting marginally more obvious, at first i thought i must have pumped the throttle slightly without thinking, but realised it wasnt me. there is some kind of gremlin at work.
today was the first time it has become a problem. much bigger revs at start up, hot or cold. Then would idle very low, when you touched the throttle it would then rev high for longer, ie slightest tap on the throttle would see 2500 revs for 4 seconds then drop down too low to idle. once up and driving it would try to stall when changing from 1st to 2nd, but other than the rev drop between slow shifts the car has the same power (or lack there of ) and drives fine.
Running badly i could make sence of but what kind of issues make it rev higher?
doesnt seem like the throttle sticking as it does it at start up when the throttle hasnt been touched all night.
any ideas of where to start looking.
thanks

been there replaced that.. exactly the symptoms ive had and i inspected the governer to find 3 tears in it.. it idled high as well.. about a $30 part (for the 3b anyway).. but you need to be a 9yr old contorionist to be able to replace it on the vehicle.. again for the 3b.Shadow wrote:from what ive read this sounds like the diaphram on the back oif your fuel pump.
they crack and then give problems with idle etc.
See if theres some diesel weaping from the back of your pump.
Quite an inexpensive part.
check yer engine manual for were the parts located, what its connected to (usually the fuel rail in the injector pump) as some are bolted and others are not..
Thanks for that guys. I will read up on the manual tonight and attack it on tuesday.
So much easier to fault find when you have a bit of a heads up.
will let you know how i go.
interestingly - today it still reved up when i turned the key, but the erratic idle had settled down. damn intermittent issues...
