GU 3 Litre Sump Oil Leak

Post by Swerve »

Question ?

Just noticed on my 2003 GU Patrol 3 Litre I have a oil leak.

Without photo’s this is a pain but here we go. The oil sump appears to be a two piece design, which bolts onto the bottom of the block. The sump drain plug and very bottom of the hump is one, with the second covering the complete bottom of the block. So picture a camel with hump and the back covering the length of the body/ block (upside down off course)

There appears to be a brace, bracket etc on the front of the camel hump to the back (ie, between the two pieces, this bracket is like a L shape (maybe 70 degrees). On the top of this bracket, going into the camel back is two bolts. The leak appears to be coming from directly under these two bolts!

So do those two bolts go directly through to the sump? Could oil come through if loose?

Are there any known problems with leaks around here?

This leak is minor, but always better to catch it now, rather then later. Secondary issue currently up at Port Stephens and about to tow my 2.4t boat home. Just feel better knowing my bottom end isn’t going to fall out (I’m a pessimist!!)

Have just fully washed it so I can warm her up tomorrow and double check the leak position and amount ! Of course will check my levels as well.

hey buddy you want to make 100% sure its sump because they are a bitch to remove as there are 3 bolts on the back of the sump that you need to remove the gearbox/auto to get to not a very good idea :/

hi mate

do you have a catch can fitted at all?

if so just check to make sure its not blocked as this will cause oil leaks from the crank case.

I had a leak on my 3.0 but it was where the oil pan connects to the engine, i replaced my catch can filter (with one that wont block) and the leaks gone away.

These engines have a problem with leaking oil from between the block and the timing sandwich plate due to a lack of sealant when assembled. The oil blows back and can make it look like the sump gasket is leaking so wash it down and keep checking on it.

These photos were taken after I had washed it down as I had a nice even dirt/mud coating. The dirt showed the oil came from somewhere in that vincinity.

However after driving home yesterday 220km and towing 2.4t no problems or no leaks ?

I'll keep watching it and see ? dumbfounded
