I dont think a local truck wrecker is going to have ex US military axles from 50 years ago? Any other ideas.

Really? W&P have had quite a few 2.5 tonne trucks (that run these axles) though their yard, so they're around.

The biggest disadvantage I can see with them is crap steering lock. The Ragged Edge cars run rockwell knuckles and outers and they have terrible lock - they really need 4WS.

Thats right, rockwell made many axles but I was suspecting that everyone would realise that I wanted the military type and not a semi-trailer type. Thanks for the scamel name that may help when searching. Pitty they are so damn heavy as they are around $800 - $1300us transport would be a killer.

i was referring to the fact that there are a lot of variations of the 2.5 tonne diffs they were used in civilian vehicles also ;)

The ones in question i would assume are the type you see on a huge variety of Rigs on pirate??

They do require a pinion brake. Unless you have heaps of cash or a damn good fabricator.

100% correct. They came on the M35 troop carrier/transport truck that was used by the US military all over the world for about 50 years. There are mountain loads of them in the US but virtually none here. They use pinion brakes because they are cheap and you can buy them out of the box with all associated fittings provided. Beats crappy drums.

They probably arent being used to the full steer lock any way - I think the locks been limited to keep the 44's clear of the links.

I don't think so, and I've heard the poor lock thing from a few sources.

Awsome price there Greg. Well worth it once the aussie doller gets back up there.

Edit: Note the above price is for each side. Still good value though i think.

Definately a good price but unsure of the little Wilwood calipers. Would have thought they would use something bigger. Good for a pinion brake with gear reduction but unsure of suitability at the wheels.

WHY would they not be OK? they are DANA 8 lug disks and 4spot calipers! there is no magical flywheel attached....

If you look on the link posted by Greg then you would also see that they do a new 6 piston caliper that they have designed and built themselves.

I guess they didnt like them either. Quoted from their website, their new calipers are "TRULY A STEP UP FROM THE WILWOOD SETUP THAT WE WERE USING".
