They probably get fitted to steel boats
EDIT - correction, the website says they DO NOT have built in compensators, and they are not specced for steel boats.

mmm, the larger, more expensive ones have built in compensation. What if i wrap it in a faraday cage to keep all the nasty fields I dont want out

The earths weak field will probably be the easiest one to shield out.

Would one be any less accurate than one of the cheapy car compases that you see around?

Just buy a good Casio watch, mine has a compass, barometer and altimeter!

Mine too.
But I can't get an accurate reading from a compass until it's held at least two feet away from my chest.
Maybe too much iron in my red blood cells.

GPS will give you true north - no magentic interference.
There are other magnetic compasses for cars which can be calibrated but I have not seen one the size you want.

They told me titanium wasn't magnetic.

Who makes the gauge holder?
Do you know how much they are worth?
Cheers

the holder is made by magnum, distributed by haigh (
http://www.haigh.com.au) Website seesm to be down atm.
Apparently they only do the carbon fibre look-a-like now.
About $40 for the triple or $30 for a 2 gauge one. I got prices from auto-one.
I ended up getting one off fleabay that looks almost identical to the one i posted at the top.
