Trashed the steering damper on a mate's 95 Disco last week, after tweaking a log. Is there any way of relocating the damn thing so it isn't hte lowest point on the vehicle?

Yes, there is a way, and it envolves replicating the Defender location...

You will be needing:
1. A rear Defender trail arm (the one that was holding the Disco damper)
2. A relocation kit to slap the damper back up front
3. A new damper, or a kit that can adapt to the existing Disco one (although the "front" dampers should have at least one "eye" mount so as to make up for the added movements...)

THe relocation kit you can do by yourself with some metal work and so forth...

Better to make a skid plate under the steering components.This can be made and bolted to the radius arm bolts and also where the damper bolts to the diff centre.

Ruff,

Are you talking about something like the Southdown guard? I have not tried it, but I heard a LOT of negatives about (a) how low it hangs, (b) how heavy vs. weak it is, and (c) they pack mud and act like a Pull-Pal.

I would prefer using better rods and so forth, and relocating the damper, why add something that may cause a liability, right? Instead, fix what is at the root of the problem...

Don't confuse the Southdown Steering Guard and the Southdown Axle Guard. The steering guard is a damn fine thing, protects the steering rod and acts like a ramp when climbing obstacles.

The Axle guard hangs below the axle and looks like it would get in the way a lot.

On a Disco, you will need to relocate the steering damper - beats me why they make position the damper where it's going to get hit. Lots of people make these - including Rockware

What you are saying is probably true, however, I would prefer to modify the links, relocate the stabilizer, and "know" where everything is in order not to get them scraping on things...

Just my honnest opinion...
