tough dog shocks leaking

Post by V8 Hilux »

The Rear tough dog shocks in my 80 series have started leaking (big bore adjustable). Is this a common problem? I think they are out of warrantry, plus i bought them second off a mate who did about 5k in a year and half and i've now done about the same. (i know doesn't get used enough!)

I was very happy been able to adjust them. are they rebuildable?

I'm thnking of getting another set if not maybe koni's? Any opinions would be welcomed!

Ive seen them blow in a week of road driving (i know everything can have a fault in it) but ive also seen alot more of them leak aswell. My opinion is adjustable shocks in general arnt that good.

We've got them on 3 different vehicles, varying weights and heights and haven't had an issue with them.

Are the shocks the right length for the coils? eg. not topping out under articulation or bottoming out on compression?

I was told by my mate thats it a 3 inch lift kit (coil and shocks tough dog). I also been told tough dog don't a 3 only a 2 or 4inch lift. Any way i'm certain they haven't done to much work! And they appear to be the right shock lenght.

The only weird thing is the both started leaking at the same time! Not long after i install the springs/schocks the springs turn around about 90 degrees at the bottom shock plates. I checked that the springs plates weren't bent and i'd put the springs in the right way which i had. I stay like that for probably about 12 months as the springs didn't look like they were going to fall out or anything.

The next time i had it on the hoist i undid the shocks and put the springs back to where the were meant to be! (haven't moved since). Not long aftter that i reckon the may have started weeping oil. now they have both leaked! Maybe the seals had got used to sitting in the one place? The car often sits for a month without being moved.

did you take the shock off before you lifted it on the hoist ?

was it a 2 post hoist ?

If so the shock has held the diff up and most likey topped out.

If it has no sway bars its worse.

Did it to mine 2 or 3 times before I worked out why I was blowing shocks.

When i put the new tough dogs in I will be putting in some limiting straps.

On a side note I went to fit a RTC steer damper that I bought 12 months ago and never fitted.

It looks like it leaking already.
Rung Avian at T/D and he has said send it back and if its stuffed he'll sort it out. Has been more than helpful.

He said the same to me but when I sent it back to them they just repainted it and sent it back without fixing the problem. Hope their after sales service has improved for your sake.

Used a 2 post hoist and then jacked up diff before undoing shocks. sway bars still attached!

Any way I think I am going to buy another set and see what happens at least new ones will be under warrantry. Thanks for the Help!
