HELP 60 Won't start anymore!!

Hey guys,
Trying to help a mate get his 60 Series project up and running asap.
Its a FJ60 Landcruiser with the stock 2F motor in it. Petrol.
We got everything bolted back on, problem is now the bastard won't start!
My mate had it running last, and it went fine. But then it conked out of its own accord, and wouldn't start again?
We checked a few things, like removing the air intake and pouring fuel in the carby throat = no start
Checked fuel was being pumped to carby = yes, pumps on engine cranking.
Checked spark, and I couldn't see anything at all....read below....
BUT I may have been testing it incorrectly.
I took the lead off the distributor, and positioned it 2mm away from an earthed bolt.
Shouldn't the ignitor arc accross to the earthed bolt when I crank the motor? or it
doesn't work like that?
Should I put one of the spark plugs into the lead from the ignitor and crank it like
that to test spark from ignitor??
I might try pulling out all the spark plugs and testing them connected to the
distributor to see if I get spark there.
Cheers,
Bart

you tested it right so you have a ignition problem to fix by the sound of it

Thanks mate,
Do I need a sparkplug in the end of the lead to test the ignitor or
should it just jump accross from the connector to the bolt?
Anyone had this issue on theri 2H?
Cheers,
Bart

it should jump or you can put a spark plug in and earth it and it should spark. either way will work

2H is a diesel, do you mean the 2F?

I would hope he means 2F.

Sorry guys
it is a 2F petrol.
How do you mean earth the plug?
just use a clamp off the thread of the plug then wired into the chassis?
I saw it done once but can't remember the exact procedure.
Cheers.

Hey Guys,
Just got back from my mates house,
We have tried everything to get this 60 going as we really
want to head up wheeling somewhere with his truck and my lux.
But we can't get the bugger started!
So here's the latest.
So far we have replaced:-
Ignitor
Distributor Cap
Rotor Button
Ignition Leads
Spark Plugs
Battery
The fuel pump is pumping fuel to the carby, so fuel is good.
I can feel air being sucked into the motor via the snorkel, so air is good.
I took one of his plugs out and connected it to its lead and tried
cranking the car over and I still get no spark!
Whats going on here fellas?
My mate is pretty new to cars, and he forgot to tell me that he accidentally jump-started the car and reversed the
polaritys on the battery so we replaced the battery and I have
replaced all the fuses in the fuse panel.
(This 60 only seems to have the 1 fuse panel and thats inside the car
under the steering wheel...there is no fuse box in the engine bay??
Or can someone tell me where it is??)
We are getting power to both the ignition coil terminals so why no spark?
Any help would be most appreciated.
IF someone can come around to North Ryde and have a look at it there
will be a case in it for you if you can get it started.
Cheers,
Bart

If you have it + + instead of + - then that could be your problem.

Yeah I thought it was odd that both +ve and -ve were showing
up with voltage?? will check the connections
can anyone take a pic of their 2F ignition coil and how it connects??
Cheers

is there power coming out the other side of the coil, ie the lead that runs to the dizzy. is the coil bolted to a steel part of the truck? some earth through the bracket.
Highly unlikely, but is the rotar turning as the engine cranks?
It's always the most simple thing haha.
Do you know anyone else with a 60 who you can borrow bits and pieces of the ignition system to try trouble shoot individual parts?
Good luck

Yeah don't know anyone that has a 2F landy tho.
Unless someone can come round to Ryde with their 2F landy
...case in it for ya
We got it narrowed down to spark not being supplied to the
distributor cap. If I earth out the lead to the dizzy off the ignitor module,
and crank there is no spark at all.
Maybe the wires are wrong?
can anyone take a picture of, or find a picture of the connectors to
a 2F ingition module, with external resistor (big ceramic block on top with
2 terminals)
What else could we be missing? Where is the ignition fuse and switch on
these landys?
Cheers,
Bart

put a test light on the - on the coil and crank the motor over see if the test light flashes. could be points they common on them (if it doesnt have elec ignition) could of fried the coil with reverse polarity too!

I had this problem when reconnecting the wiring to a 3f yonks ago. You have to get the resistor wiring right, then resistor to coil right, multimeter helps. Sorry, not much help but there are only so many combos.

Have you got spark at the points when you wind it over?
Have the points been set correctly, with the rubbing block on one of the dissy shaft cam lobes?
Maybe you mate killed the coil when he hooked the battery up the wrong way......

Found this diagram, might help........

Thanks mate.
So the ignition coil is not actually "earthed" directly per say?
That makes sense cause both the terminals are getting +ve readings.
I thought it was weird. But it does earth after the small little box thing
that interfaces to the tacho I spose.
So its OK to get voltage on both sides of the Ignition coil from what
I can see? So that's not really an issue I spose.
We bought a new resistor (ceramic thingo on top) and fitted that too?
We are getting voltage in and out of the resistor down to the coil,
Then there is also power to the other wires that go to the distributor,
but no spark??
Also, I noticed that there is no "battery" light when the reds come on?
I also notice that there does not seem to be a "charge" light either, and
the stocko voltage meter is not registering anything at all (but batt is ok).
We checked all the fuses and they are all fine?
IS there anyone in Sydney with a FJ60 that could come round to my mates
place at Ryde anytime soon? We'd really appreciate it, plus we could all
go wheeling together if we can get this beast running. My mate is gutted
he wanted to get alot of drive time in this holidays but so far the 60 aint
moved one bit :(
Cheers,
Bart

Strange that you have power at the coil, but no spark. Do you have a volt meter to see how many volts you have at the coil? might not be enough.
I don't know if 60s have a fusable link in the battery wiring, but even so, if you have some power at the coil you should be able to get it running.
Do you have a digital camera you can take some pictures with and post on here or email?
When you wind it over, do you get spark at the points? (if not there is an issue with the coil or power to it)
What is the rotor button like? maybe a new lead from coil to dissy?
