GQ TD4.2 -T alternate airbox options???

yo
getting along with my turbo conversion for my gq td4.2 and ive hit a snag. turns out tracking down a gu t4.2T airbox is a bit hard. what other air box options have people used?
requirements are that it must sit nice and snug in the corner so allow for fitment of duel batteries. and air intake must come from the gaurd to fit up with snorkel.
i was looking a a std vn commie airbox today, looked like it mite nearly fit. but it woudl require a solid air con line to be modified/moved.
anyone else used any others? alternativly if anyone has a gu td4.2 T airbox around pm me

Have a look at a GQ Rd2.8t air box
They sitt near the passanger head light and the fixing holes might even line up

I have put in a 3L Grenade airbox.
I had to cut part off it (3L have a square part that the MAF sensor bolts to) but that was easy to remove, it fits in and allows me to use the Dual Batteries
If you want a couple of pics send me a PM with ya email address will get you some

I made a big cahuna for mine....
fits a uni filter pod: 200mm long x 140mm diameter with 3" outlet.
I recently made a 4" stainless snorkel for it too.....dropped my EGTs by almost 50degC on flat ground at 100km/h, runs less boost doing so too.
The GU TD42T boxes can be a bit restrictive if you run high boost, my mate running 24psi boost tuned his ute then pulled the filter out - or just popped the top off the filter box - then ran it on the dyno again, gained another 15RWkW or so.
that was with a genuine nissan filter though.
cheers

thanx for the replies guys. looking into 3.0L one now
oondy, i dont think i need sumething quite so custom as im only looking to run about 10-12psi. so a factory airbox of some kind should be pretty effective. looks sweet though....

I had a 200mm x 120mm Diameter filter in a slightly smaller box....and it was a bit too small for 13-14psi.... I put this one in (both tested with the crappy air-flow snorkel) and the turbo lag / boost response was like chalk and cheese.
the GU's only run about 7-8psi from the factory and I don't think the air boxes are designed to suit much more, bigger is better IMO when it comes to filters.

whats the difference in grenade box and the TD42T one?
Posted: Wed Dec 03, 2008 1:52 pm
by mr_wonderful
bogged the only difference i can see is that the zd30 one has a flange to mount the MAF sensor while the td42turbo one dosent
why dont you try a tb45/tb48 one they fit well but because of the way they sit you may have to pull the battery out to change air filters
cheers

If you look in the end of the TD42T outlet, you can see the bend out the top is half blocked off.....the 3L one has the full diameter of the bend coming out the top....NFI why nissan would do that in the first place.
cheers

It is possible to fit a 80series Landcruiser airbox at the back of the engine bay. Need to move some things around. Best bit though is the filters are dirt cheap compared to the GQ filters (not sure what GU filters are like).

They're huge as well....then if you put it where you say, you can plumb a big ass snorkel in with minimal length...boo yah.

Any1 got pics of the outlet of the ZD30 airbox (down the inside as described above)? It's got me interested as to how different they are (TD42-T Vs ZD30).... may have to invest in a ZD30 box if they are that restrictive.....

I just finished fitting a ZD30 air cleaner to my RD28 GQ....and damn it makes a difference !!
The square section on the engine side I very carefully ground off and used a 90 deg. angle and joined it straight to original intake pipe...with a few alterations of position , angle etc...mostly by just loosening clamps and adjusting.
The airbox itself bolted up to existing bolt holes no worries.
The boost lag off idle has dropped heaps....and boost comes on about 200 revs lower...exhaust temps seem lower....and once on full boost pulls better n than it ever did...and the intake howl is now a bloody shriek.
Had to make a fairly dustproof thick fitting to join to snorkle...but the whole job ended up being pretty easy once I sussed it out.
My fuel figures went down ...on average...about 1.2k/litre.
This is a good mod to do I reckon...n Nissan needs a poke intheeyewithabluntstick for being so damn restrictive in the first place.

its only the lid the 4.2 box is fine but the lid does not flow .The 4.2 has a better lip on the underside for the air filter to seal on .I cut the bend out and used a 90 mm pvc 90 but havnt finished it yet currently i have a 3L lid on and it worked heaps better than the 4.2 one

st391gq - when you say it bolted into the exsiting bolt holes no worries, does it bolt tight and snug into the front corner of the engine bay? cause thats were it will need to be to fit 2 batteries with a 4.2 (nfi about 2.8)

i fitted a ZD30 airbox into my GQ,
with an ARB battery tray i had some dramas fitting it, in the end i had to move the ARB battery tray and overflow bottle 30-50mm rearwards, which also meant reshaping the inner guard as the overflow bottles are shapped to suit the inner guard,
once i did all this it went in sweet and bolted up to original holes,
i cut the square flange got the maf sensor off to run 3" hoseoff it,
also the flange that seals to the inner guard i cut off as well, and connected the snorkel to airbox with 3" silicon hose as well with bug heavy duty clamps,

Yeah I'm in the same boat. I have to say that I'm not overly impressed with the ARB tray. I had to cut the corner off it so it would clear the Denco turbo, so moving it back is not really an option for me. I'm looking at reshaping the front end of it and then going to a smaller aux battery. I had to cut bits off it so it would line up with the mounting holes and other bits off it so it wouldn't foul the aircon hoses, so I may as well go all the way.
To fit the air cleaner I got an exhaust guy to expand up a short length of 3" pipe so it will fit over the snorkel outlet, and then I'm using a silicon 3" to 3 1/2" adapter to connect from the pipe to the ZD 30 airbox inlet, from which I have cut off the flange. I also cut the square bit off the outlet and am planning on the 3" hose idea.
I did try an 80 series airbox in that corner, with a plan to relocate the battery and overflow bottle but it was major work to get it all to fit without reshaping the guard, so I ended up tossing it in the bin.

Yep...goes up quite close to lip on front panel that holds radiator.
I reckon it would be nigh on impossible to change a headlight bulb now...unless you had a trained octopus (n a little one at that)...prolly gunna hafta undo mounting ring at the front of light now to get at bulb.
These air cleaner housings are quite large really...but I have no problem with my dual battery as I have a pirana cradle which goes right back near firewall behind (or at rear of) the overflow bottle.
I( also hadda "modify" (with a hammer) the bonnet gusset that comes down over the aircleaner...but not muchreally. A few well aimed whacks and everything was sweet.
HTH.

CRAP! That rules out an easy bolt in setup. Bloody ARB sh1t.

Bruce, I have bought a 3 litre airbox just on what I have been reading, hopefully matt.mcinnes will get pics of the difference when he picks it up and installs it (i'm back to work again 2morrow, damn this 2 on 1 off stuff! pays the bills though lol) so will hopefully post something in the next few weeks. Am going to get an adaptor made up that bolts onto the flange as well, same as this, in fact this is exactly what I am going to end up with lol thanks to whoever posted these pics on patrol forum!

i had a look at the 2 different air boxes today, between the TD42t, ZD30 and also the RD28T,
the TD42t does reduce down in size a bit off the top of the lid, where the ZD30 and RD28 remain pretty much the same size,
so if your going to run one of these look for the ZD30 or RD28,
and i didnt think to take pics, but if needed i might be able to get some on wednesday

Trick photography, will clear.
In the middle of fitting my ZD30 Box to the TB42E.
Air Flow Meter is close, bolts up to 2 out of the 4 holes but with some straps and sealant will be water and dirt tight.

For those guys that have fitted a ZD30 airbox to their GQ, what did you do with the crankcase vent hose? I notice in one of the pics it looks like it's just venting into the engine bay. I was thinking about plumbing it into the crossove pipe that runs from the turbo to the inlet manifold??

I'll be running a catch can (as do most people). You shouldn't plumb it in where you are suggesting as the turbo will pressurise back down the breather pipe.

Correct, it needs to be plumbed in pre-turbo.
