What is a good price for a 2.5l V6 and box?

I have found a 2.5l GV V6 smashed sitting in a blokes front yard and I want to offer him some $$$ for the motor, gearbox and all the bits for a conversion. What would be a good price to get it for? I am thinking of offering him around $1500.

average price from wreckers for just a motor is about $2500 upwards.

$2500
Does that include the comp and wires? I hate to think what they charge for a gearbox, any ideas?

$2500 is expensive IMHO for just an engine! I've picked up a Jap import engine and gearbox (Daihatsu though) for $600, other places wanted over $1500 just for the same engine.....
Shop around for prices. $2500 would be OK for a low km complete "front cut" (ie. engine, gearbox, loom computer etc. still fitted in the front of the vehicle with everything else.)

I think $2500 is a little steep too. I bought a 1.6l front cut years ago for $1500. I think I will make an offer well below $2500 to get negotiations started.

So let me get this right, you have no idea what it is worth,
so you ask here, a member who buys and sells Suzuki parts tells you around $2500,
someone else tells you how much a Daihatsu engine is worth,
and you disregard Joe's advice based on what you paid for a completely different engine purchased many years ago, I am not saying offer $2500 (I would start at 1200) but I thought you may have come across a bit rude
Maybe next time ask your barber, because you may not get everyone's attention here with your next request for advice.
Peter.

A 1.6l front cut is not a V6 2.5L btw

par for the course here. Ask a question get an informed answer but as it wasn't what you wanted to hear ignore that until you get some completely wrong answer that you agree with and go with that instead. Then two months later post another thread trying to solve the problems from the first one because you didn't listen to informed answers in the first place.
And of course it should all be in sms style to make it the perfect Suzi section.
Maybe another option would be to ring around to some wreckers etc nd hear from them how much one will go for as they are pretty rare to find. Or of course don't

2.5 v6's are not readily available as half-cuts yet....so wreckers can charge what they like. and don't compare prices of 4 pots to suzuki v6's.....big difference....and don't start me on what a 2.7 is worth. it is cheaper for me to get a lexus v8...than even a vit 2.0 litre v6. i deal with engines all the time.

Well perhaps you should have said that in your original post?
Some other people should relax a bit too.

I think you should read my replys again. I had no intention of being rude, I simply stated that $2500 was what I thought to be steep just Like joeblow said, "it is cheaper for me to get a Lexus v8...than even a vit 2.0 litre v6." I know a 1.6l front cut is a bad comparison (Barely comparable on a good day) but that is the only thing somewhat similar that I have purchased. I don't deal with this stuff everyday and ringing local wreckers didn't seem like the best idea when I could get a national price guide from here. I didn't ask for people to do a ring around of their local wreckers for prices, a rough guide. I am at a loss as to when you thought I disregarded joeblow's advice? In Fact I suggested that I was going to offer under $2500 and see how the negotiations go as it's not a wrecker that I will be dealing with.

I'm not going to buy in to the crap, except to say that the price for engines all depends on demand and application.
So, any motor that is a direct replacement for a car with a blown motor will be more expensive than something that will always be a conversion.
So, Lexus V8's are plentiful in Japan but here they will be dirt cheap because the only market for them is in complicated conversions. Likewise 1JZ motors.
1.6 vitara motors are relatively expensive because they are an easy fit into a sierra and are getting harder to come by in Japan.
Desirable versions of australian market motors that get blown up often ( like STi WRX motors, S15 SR20's, 4G63 EVO motors etc) are worth LOTS.
So, a 2.5 GV motor is a direct drop in for the guy who has just blown his motor up, they're hard to find as there aren't many GV's getting wrecked, and there's stuff all interest in bringing one in from japan as they aren't a "performance" motor so there's very limited demand.
so, $2500 is about right.
It's got NOTHING to do with the motor, only the market for it- going rate for a 660cc cappucino motor is $2200.

Actually there are a lot of "used" H25A engines if you start googling for them. As I was trying to say earlier (with my misconstrued Daihatsu example) it pays to shop around.
You could even pick up a 0km H27A for $6k in SA (one place has a few of them- all out of written off new vehicles.) From past experience I know they ALWAYS want top $$$ for their engines. Given the kms that doesn't seem so bad a deal.
I reckon there wouldn't be that big a market for the H25A's as apart from the timing chain tensioner issues they seem very reliable.

As a investigation recently I was looking at a V6 and it was very much the sellers market - prices were high.
The V6 isn't a performance engine ( @ 109 kW its power output is decidedly average - its cousin the Mazda 2.5 V6 makes 169kW.... ) good ones are just rare and in demand to replace the problem ones.
IMO would need to make substantially more power to be worth the $$ and effort - but that's just my view.

I have seen half cuts for less than $2000 from Wreckers. Engines from six hundred and autos can be picked up for as little as a couple of hundred and sometimes less and transfer cases are pretty much worthless imho. Of course some charge a bit more but if it was a private sale without any guarantees I wouldn't be paying too much.

Thanks for that.
Also, what is a half cut?

Yes, they're certainly nothing special as far as "modern" V6's go. Pretty agricultural in their operation and not very fuel efficient- but a Commodore owner would probably be happy in comparison.
You'd be mad to pay $2500 for a (possibly suss) used one- it would be better investing the money in a rebuild. Shopping around a bit I reckon you'd probably find a wrecker who would want to off load one or two a bit cheaper - I don't reckon they'd be selling too quickly.
