what set out to be a simple exercise to install a snorkel on my 3.0L diesel hilux is doing my head in. I now have a serious vibration rattle at low revs (1500 - 2000rpm). Have pulled the thing off 3 times but cannot find it.
Any suggestions

I had a few rattles when I put one on my 2.8 Lux, turned out that I hadn't tightened up the nylock nuts enough on the inner guard and the washers were rattling against the panel. May help, may not. I'm guessing that you've had it apart enough that this may not be it.

Snorkles on Hilux Diesels tend to resonate a bit at certain revs.
That sends a bit of vibration from the snorkle body into the guard and can cause rattles and buzzs all over the place.
Tis a pain in da ass.
Simple fix - turn up the stereo a notch
Paul.

thanks heaps for the tips. I will give it a try - if it don't work I'll have to fix the stereo...

Mine was the metal disc at the top of the snorkel that sits at the bottom of the air ram. Loosen the Air ram and whack it done hard onto the snorkel and tighten again.

from memory i think that safari fix for this was to put an extra foam pod in the top of the air ram...
tryed ringing safari (if its there's) or taking back to who ever fitted it ??

try the plastic inner guard as mine used to rattle after I put the snorkel on
, an extra screw in the right place fixed that

I use to fit these for a liveing and never had one come back with a rattel they where all safari snorkels and because this is a common problem i tock care to make sure the holes around the studs are bigger than the studs and that the foam was placed on the gard etc they also have a restriction washer fitted to the top before the ram pod on the non turboded ones if you make sure you fit it as per the instructions and are careful to have none or the snorkel come incontact with the body of the car you will have no problems . Simply if you didn't have a rattel before and you do now and if it is a good quality snorkel you haven't fitted it well enough . Make sure you are chaseing a rattel and not a bareable resonateing engine noise as you are not likely to get that out of a hilux . Hope this helps good luck , would be good to here the out come .

Daz. In mention to the restriction Washer on the Non-Turbo lux snorkle, will removing it make any difference?

What way.........
Better? Or makes too much airflow if thats possible?
Then I ask... Why is it there in the first place?

On a 2.8 it only has a foam pod at the top, I found it restricted the air to much, made it smoke heeps and loose of power was huge. After removing it power was up and smoke had gone. Made some niose but its a 4x4 so who gives a fark. I think they only fit em to reduce the niose

Cheers Guts. Will take it out and see what happens.

I was thinking of taking out the resinator box to put another battery, will this bring on the noise? i have a safari snorkel and turbo but no major noise...

Cheers DAZ. After reading your post I suspect that it is the size of the holes I drilled around the studs. The snorkel is a safari, and the "destructions" said to drill 16-18mm holes. Largest drill bit I had was a 12mm - needless to say, that's what I used
. I will enlarge the holes this weekend and hope that fixes the prob.
On another note, is there meant to be foam between the snorkel and the guard? The kit never had one
though I did pick it up 2nd hand.
The whole process hasn't been a waste of time though, I did manage to eliminate some minor rattles in the guards - the plastic clips on the fibreglass flares and the indicator light. Just used some bits of old chamoise (spelling?) cut out to shape between the offending clips and the guards.
Will let you know if enlarging holes works

Tonka, I thought it might be this restriction washer on mine also. My thought is taht restriction of the airflow is gonna create turbulance inside the snorkel and create some noise/vibration. I spoke to ARB tho and was told that removing the wqasher could cause the rubber tubing between the snorkel and the airfilter to collapse due to the increased vacuum
I don't know if the snorkels for late model luxes are the same as earlier ones, but if it worked for GUTS, I might give it a try too

With a snorkel for a 2.8 (atleast) they supply a big spring that goes in side the standard hose to stop it from collapsing.
