gq automatic kick down problems

Recently put in anither autoin my 89 GQ. Worked fine for a couple of weeks.
However recently after a 50km drive went to accelerate"kick down" and insteda of dropping a gear it drops 2 gears and revs in the red. This is when I'm usually in 'lock up' doing over the 80km mark.

It doesn;t do it all the time. Also recently when you start it for the first time, in most cases lock up doesn't engage, if after a 50km drive. To fix this all I did was switch the enige off and start again and it works like a treat, never missing a beat.

I am getting conflicting answers to this from the experts.
Inhibitor switch? or Throttle Sensor Switch?

On rare occasions when you start the vehicle, the orange power light flashings about 8 times to.

Has anyone encountered this? If you could shed some light would appreciate before I start replacing all the switches.

Also auto runs nice and cool and very smooth too. so its not a heating problem.

Regards, Rudi

Just a small easy thing, check the trans oil level and grade.
Thin trans oil or low level can cause trans to kick down and it's not till you lift your foot off the loud pedal that it finds the higher gear again (if at all).
After 50kms or so the oil will be at a warmer (and thinner) consistancy and so begins to highlite this problem as well.
Also, if the new autotrans was a 2nd hand jobbie rather than a new recon jobbie, you can expect the tolerances are not going to be upto the specs that the users manual states, and so may not agree with oil grades the manual states is required.
Think about trying a heavier trans oil or installing a trans oil cooler.
Gotta be cheaper to try the heavier oil first. If it doesn't work, it hasn't cost you a packet to find out.
Can't help with the lights and switches though.

If you have had enough of being charged lots for little, take to Rodney at Wholesale Auto's, or Dave at KB Auto in Berwick.

Probably go there would work best, that way you can ask them to take for test drive see what htey think is wrong..

KB are good, they were first auto place I went to when I got GQ years ago.. Good honest people.

Gave them the OK the on GQ to do Torque Converter after 2 mechanics in area told me it was rooted.. They got in the bits, then started the job and told me it wasnt the problem and fixed it for couple a hunge, compared to the 1000+ I'd oked them to do.

will let you know, hopefully soon.

Oil used is proper Nissan oil as per spec, had tran temp guage and shows lower temp than normal becasue I run 2 x coolers....

sourcing problem maybe in TPS or ihibitor switch, or even possible can be tacho sensor... will keep you informed

there could be something else wrong. The eight flicker is for the A/T Fluid Temperature Sensor, it may be faultly. This sensor is used to tell the TCM how hot the A/T is. Once the A/T reaches a set temp then and only then will the torque converter lock up. it may pay to check it out.

l agree with striga22, they are a lazy auto and need a decent right foot most of the time. That seems to be the best way to get them to go down a gear.
