I pulled out my front diff carrier in my 105 series today
I broke my front diff gears in my 105 series and put a nice dent in the locker housing these centers are just to weak I thought I would have broke a cv before the center

i think the locker is OK still just broke the crown and pinion gears I bought a 2nd hand diff and have stripped the carrier out I will get my diff guy to swap the locker over and check to see if the locker still works okjoel HJ60 wrote:Has the centre failed or has the CW tooth come off?

These things happen if you play hard....the c\v in a 105 is large, drive plates have no give...so the ring is the next weakest link one other thing you can do is machine up a solid spacer inplace of the collapseable one in the pinion bearings... Aftermarket gears might help too 4.56 would have less teeth on the ring, so thicker lands....the 4.3 has 43 teeth, 4.1 in an 80 has 41 same diameter ring thicker lands....and they were known to break easy enough...

have a talk to jmac (john) and see what he has to say, thier is a bit of a nack in setting up these lockers, he is also able cryo treat the whole centre for you as well, it might also be the second hand crown wheel and pinion etc

Ive seen some setup with the GQ front centre, it gives the best of both worlds.jimbo jones wrote:well I went for a wheel at Appin today first time off road since I fitted the new/second hand crown and pinion and just my luck it up again same noise coming from front diff what is cousing this to happen? With a pinion with more teeth which are smaller than the 4.3 pinion...so its sort of tit-for-tat.dow50r wrote:If you are going to spend that much coin, buy 4.56 or 4.88 aftermarket ratios the 4.3 is a weak toothed ring. 4.56 run 37 instead of 43 on thesame diameter.
4.88 ratio have even smaller teeth again. But you can get some cryo treated jobbies from the States - Randy's Ring and Pinion for one - and they wold hold up to more abuse.
The best option for peace of mind and cost effectiveness over the long run is to graft a H233 front diff into your 100 series housing. Still high pinion but an inch bigger.
Who wouldn't want an extra inch.

also more preload on the case might help too.lukethedork wrote:I say go for Randys R&P. Think of how much stronger quality axle shafts are compared to weak ones, so why not R&P's?
Also, try playing with your mesh pattern. More Root and Toe mesh. (And no, I don't actually know anything about diff setups...)
really need a diff specialist who knows these diffs, im sure there are simple little things they do that may ciompromise longevity of the gearset, but bolster the strength that little bit.
Same centre as GU..bj on roids wrote:Ive seen some setup with the GQ front centre, it gives the best of both worlds.jimbo jones wrote:well I went for a wheel at Appin today first time off road since I fitted the new/second hand crown and pinion and just my luck it up again same noise coming from front diff what is cousing this to happen? But yeah, the custom housing is spendy.
Try one more proper setup...
