Hang on, you mean the 3.0L blow up alot more?
If the case how much slower is the 2.8?

the 2.8's are gutless and and have injector pump issues, the early model 3lt moter was prone to blow as the turbo would shiv its self and put metal parts into the block, the 4.2 is the best thing around its very slow but it will never let you down.
If you could get a 4.2 for under 20k i would be surprised.
you could get a kick ass GQ for 15k but you probably want the good looks of a gu

Try if you like but people are still reporting issues with later model 3lt's, granted its less common but still happens.
