Looking at buying a gu patrol wagon for a dayley driver and to to my other 4by around with. was after a diesel 4.2 but was wondering are the 4.5 ltr duel fuel 1s any good. is there anything you have to look out for much with them or they a good giga.Cheers

a TB45 powered GU is not a bad option, its the same block as the old TB42 however its had a few changes done (head and injection system) that make it a bit more powerful then the old girl, and with the new head they don't crack heads
on Dual Fuel your laughing as the TB45 is a thristy beast, but LPG your going to be going longer for less.

It would happliy sit at above legal hiway speeds, even with a car and trailer combined weight of over 6 tonnes.
Tonnes of potentail for mods to make a very comfy (if somewhat thirsty) daily driver and very acceptable tourer.
Very durable, I am looking to by another right now. (would love the 4.8 though .. more power is always welcome)

99 GU 4.2TD Wagon stock, 3 years 140K+ kms
02 GU 4.2TD Wagon (Boost/3"dump exhaust/pump timing etc) 1 year 40k kms
05 GU 4.2TD intercooled Ute (stock) 25k kms &
01 Gu 4.5 LPG (2.5" exhaust / extractors / snorkle) (current)
I bought the 4.5 GU becasue it was cheap, and cheap to run. Has more power than my old stock 4.2TD but not as much as the 02 with work.
For evey day driving and local stuff (Vic High Country etc) it is great, 85lt LPG rtank gets on average 400kms, also have 70lt petrol tank that gives around 300kms.
The engine in mine has only done 10k kms (new replacement from Nissan after keyway gave out). Acceleration is better than 4.2 diesels but diesels certainly have more torgue.
The main advantage of the 4.5 over 4.2 is running costs and purchase price.

One of my mates has the 4.5 running 35's with diff gears, but it has an auto, we have swapped vehicles and I'll admit mine was running 33's but with standard gearing though but I think he will agree that he would rather the 4.2 Turbo Diesel anyday. the TD42T is definately the pcik of the bunch.
But you can find decent 4.5 GU's now in the 15K range and lower if your prepared to wait.
Wth some minor work they can tow just fine. A decent exhaust helps alot (the factory unit necks down to less than 45mm at some points .. not alot of breathing space for a 4.5 liter motor) Mine was fine pulling a sail of a trailer (7x8 with a 5 foot tall sheet metal box on it) after I fitted a decent set of extractors and proper non drinking straw exhaust. (2 and 3/4 inch system)
On gas they are not to bad to run (on petrol they can get pretty expensive .. I used to drive mine 800+ kms a week).
I have driven my borthers Td42t GU uste and I still am not 100% coninced I like it in the bush .. I love the petrols larger rev range and the ability to down shift and make instant wheel speed without that slight lag diesals have.
That endless torque of the diesal is pretty nice though.
