Not sure to use which leaf spring for Rocky SPOA project
Hey mates need some quick advise b4 i make a wrong decision.
Currently doing a SPOA project on my F85 Daihatsu Rocky with LN106 axles.
I have a choice of either using back my 2inch lift Daihatsu Rocky (petrol engine) Ultimate Suspension leaf springs or should i use 2 inch LN106 (diesel) Ultimate Suspension leaf springs?
Also i just realised that the LN106 front leaf springs seems to be shorter than the Rocky front leaf springs when i tried fitting it on the original spring mounts.
So what would you do if u were in my shoes?
Go for which leaf spring?
I noticed some ppl in this forum mix and match leaf springs.
How do u go about that?
Is it as simple as taking the main (top most) leaf spring from my Rocky and then the rest of the pack from the Hilux?
Or there's more to it?
My mechanic doesn't like the idea of mix and match the leafsprings as i'll end up breaking them.
I like the compliance of the Rocky front leafs but i'm concern that they are not able to take the weight of the car as i just binned the 4Y engine for a 3L turbo diesel.
So what would u guys do...
Oh at the same time i thought of trying to push the front axle further? How would u guys do it? Push the mounts forward or just fabricate the axle relocation kit?
I'm really a noobie when it comes to technical stuff.
Help.
Thanks in advance.

My RIG sucks big time.
im running hiluz front leaves on all 4 corners of my zuk - i dont see why you cant run hilux fronts up front and hilux rears in the back - will give a longer leaf with more flex, but youll have to play with the pack and the shocks to get the best combo of comfort/flex/reliability.
Downside to longer leaves will the spring/axle wrap though.
If the aim is to keep it simple, go stock leaves SPOA. the SPOA is giving you lift, so after that you want to get the softest flexiest leaves you can find =)

Ah that's my point, coz surprisingly the leafsprings on the rocky is slightly longer than the Hilux.
So was wondering if i should use the Rocky ones instead.
But because i'm swapping to a diesel engine i'm worried that the Rocky leaf spring might not take it and the springs will be beyond flat.
It's like a big project to me, so everything is all new to me and always over concerned like an expecting father.

^^ what he said - coils are great (if you have the engineering knowledge to make them work well though).
i didnt realise hilux leaves were shorter =)... i still say go stock leaves... if they start to sag out you can add a leaf or put in some heavier duty leaves. dont forget too that upping the weight too much in one end is going to really change the dynamics of the rocky on and offroad...

if you don't want to do coils look at the range of toyota 60 series springs as these feature much bigger spring bushes than hilux and aid in more flex.
lwb 1.6efi,4sp auto,f&r airlockers,dual t/cases.custom coils.builder of ROAD LEGAL custom suzukis...and other stuff.

Oh yes that's another thing, the Rocky leafs have much bigger bushes too compared to the Hilux leafs.
So u think i should just go for the Rocky leafs and if they can't cope with the weight i should combined the Hilux bottom leafs with the Rocky main leafs? Btw i notice the top main leaf on the Rocky is thinner than the Hilux.
Btw i can't find my stock Rocky leafs plus they only have 3 leafs up front.
60 series LC, very rare to find.
Coils..... that's only if money grows on trees.

wreckers will have tons of springs you can nab - otherwise a set of 4 leaves for most vehicles is around the $500 mark... ideally though you'd want to get a wrecker set and see how they go, if theyre too soft you can buy brand new heavy duty leaves made specifically for the rocky, rather than mixing different leaves from different packs.

Ok point taken.
Just for your info I'm from Malaysia, so some of the parts u guys might take for granted, it's rare and vice versa.
So it's either my current Rocky aftermarket or Hilux aftermarket leafsprings. Not mix and match right?
Oh btw i checked out your Zook. Looks sweet. Must be fun driving it round the track and doing lane changes hehe.
If i did managed to find the rims with the ideal offset like yours (Rocky rims are 5 holes) and found 4.8 final drive ratio i would have probably still stuck with the factory axles and engine as the rear already had a locker diff.

ahhhh cool i just came back from malaysia a few weeks back - played in the Asian World Cup (paintball) - we stayed at the Pearl Intl. Hotel about 5 mins drive from the field (xtion i think its called?).
If its of any use - the hilux leaves im using on my zuk are malaysian made and were $90 a pack here in perth... you should be able to get leaves for a steal being that they're making them there =)

Let me guess they are APM (Automotive Product Malaysia).
Actually i'm not surprised as back in the 80s lots of 4x4 aftermarket stuff were built in Malaysia and packaged in Oz.
See how it goes. I'll try out with the 2inch lift Hilux leafsprings i have and will swap if they don't feel right.
Yeah the Bukit Jalil Stadium http://www.xtionpaintball.com/ is a 5 min drive from where' i'm staying. will u be back in the near future?
Friends have been bugging me to take up paintballing.

heeh yeah theyre APM - theyre decent springs though, i was worried theyd sag out real quick but they are holding up really well.
Yeh, thats the place too - my team came 2nd in the cup, so i'd say we'll head back next year and push for the gold =) If you're interested in taking up paintball go down and watch some teams train, talk to them abou their guns and gear - if you buy some paint almost every baller will let you have a shoot of his gun. Its a VERY expensive sport (more-so in malaysia than perth too!) but its awesome fun.

APM are reputable as they are an OEM manufacturer. So that speaks for itself.
Ah that's the thing with paint ball, i keep asking my friends that keeps bugging me to take up the sport and ditch cars if i can bring in a 12 guage with a slug to their paintball games. I dunno why they don't allow me. LOL.
Oh another thing on your Zook this u remove any leafs from the pack to make it softer or straight out of the box?
Also i noticed u have 2 links at the rear? Was your car really horrible to drive without them?
How come u didn't consider doing a typical traction ladder bar which connects the diff on most hilux setup?
