Why would they be hard to store?

A lot of guys carry around a chainsaw for firewood and clearing trees when wheeling already, the attachment doesn't look any bigger than a small esky.

How well does it work, and how much strain is it putting on the chainsaw would be my only concerns. That and at $800 US, with a bit of shopping around you could buy and fit a second hand warn.

$800 USD = $1,216.915 AUD. You could just buy a proper winch for that money. The idea of having the winch basically loose between the two recovery points doesn't fill me with much confidence. Would hate to be anywhere near it under strain. Doesn't appear to have a remote for it so you would have to be hanging on controling it under load.

Maybe these guys could get together with the bush winch guys and our friend the pop riveter and have a winch off

Could be a problem if you were trying to pull said log onto a trailer attached to your car or the back of a ute.
I put a log on the trailer the other day, on my own with just a crow bar, measured 2400 long 500 dia, was green as grass and damn heavy worked out at about 440kg (unhooked the trailer and stuck the tailgate under the edge then managed to hook it back up and reversed the whole lot under the log) - Wanted the log whole to mill into slabs.
For the money you could probably get one of those warn atv winches or something similar - thats what i'd go for.

The husky at the top looks to be a 395xp, they run 7.1hp stock, torque can easily be had with reduction gearing(which it would obviously have), more than enough grunt for 4000lb

i can see the use of it but ... a normal winch + a block would do the same plus be safer by the looks of it

No, you would only get the winch.
One positive would be the portability.
Get a second hand 8000lb Warn of Ebay, make a cradle and you have a cheap portable winch.

I think you guys are being far too harsh. Just because there's a well proven, reliable method of winching doesn't mean people shouldn't try and think of alternatives.

Look at me, I've taken the high prices of fuel into account and I'm going to start riding a bike. But I reckon it can be improved on.

Thats good , you have to stand right in line of fire to operate it.
For $800 I don't think you would get half a stihl chainsaw hanging off the back off it either, and the only thing I would trust pulling with that size cable is my ****.

Doesn't mean it's not a good thing, just means it's another peice of recovery gear most cannot aford. I made mine from a Magnum 8000 when replaced by the highmount.

So what do you use when a tree is across the track and your saw is mounted to one of these winches?

Look the concept aint bad, it's just that price a winch from the States and you will see that $800 will buy you an electric winch.

On the other hand, these guys probably also invented the suicide saw (standard grinder with guard removed and circular saw blade attatched).

The winch that i like most of all is a Mile Marker either a 10,500 Lb or 12,000 lb Hydraulic PTO winch (Exactly the same as TJM OX branded here in Aus), fitted with a larger 10cc/rev hydraulic pump.

Ebay US has these winches at about $685.00 US wheras TJM want $2400 Aud for one to suit a GU.

I reckon they can be a cheap, fast recovery in some situations. Everyone would have to agree for sand they would shit all over electric winches.

There used to be an old guy (i think he's passed away now) that owned Bamford and Smith winches in Blackrock Melbourne, and he made a 15000 lb and 20000 lb winch and you could buy an attachment to run it off your chainsaw. I am sure someone has modified an electric winch to be run by a chainsaw as well.

I met the guy years back at the 4wd show and he was showing me the drawings of the mechanical drive for the chainsaw.

Actually I have a turbo TB45 GU and have never been bogged in sand and probably never will. So maybe on 2nd thought the wheel winches aren't required.!!!


And if a conrod let's go again, the wheel winches will be useless.

I have thought of something similar.
If it had some kind of decent range remote I actually like the concept. Faster and way less effort than a hand winch (that also puts you in the line of fire so to speak) lighter than an electric portable and 100% independant of the vehicles charging or hydraulic systems.
You can still use the normal overload clucth on the saw to limit the total pull to something below the rating of the cable.
Use winch rope (for weight and safety reasons)

I purchased a decent (old but good) stihl 034 saw of ebay a few years back for $300 .. less than a decent winch motor .. not including solinoids, upgraded and heavey charging systems etc ..

for hardcore comp work .. you need all that carp .. for someone like me you need it once or twice a year.

These are leaps and bounds ahead of junk like wheel winches.

You can get a 65cc 4.0hp Chinese saw on ebay for about $150 - $200
