Cruiser engine identification

I've just taken possesion of an FJ45, but it has a diesel 6 cylinder engine in it. AFAIK FJ's were all petrol. The FJ45 (which this is) also came out with a 3.something petrol 6 cylinder and 4 speed manual - this one is 5 speed manual. Does anyone know where I look on the engine to determine what engine it is?

engine number. the first digit or 2 should tell you (H's start with H, 2H's start with 2H). their on the drivers side halfway down the block i think for the diesel that should be in it)

all Fj's are petrol, however, Hj45's were diesel (exactly same shape). you sure it's an Fj? even so, it's not a hard swap

Not 100% sure it's a FJ. But I am very sure for 2 reasons - the silver plate on the firewall passenger side says "FJ45", 2, it's 1969, according to RedBook only the FJ45 was available in the ute shape then.

As for the engine number, drivers side, so it should be in the first picture I've put up. Looks like the inlet manifold and some of the diesel gear are in the way. I'll have another look tonight after work.

Is it just me or does that look like it's injected.. and they didn't have injected engines in 1969?. Could be a transplanted engine.

EDIT:
Just noticed you put diesel there, so it's just the glowies I'm seeing?

Not necesarily. According to Wikipedia, HJ45 wasn't launched until 1973 ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_FJ40 ). My ride is 1969. it also has the original silver plate on the firewall that says FJ45. So my guess is that it's had an engine conversion later on in life rather.

So the 2H is a 4.0L 102HP? Anyone got a link to a site with some decent info on this engine?

its most definately a 2H. Its clearly had the original F engine removed for future service as a boat anchor. You lucky bastard. Also, they only started putting the 5speeds in 45's in late 83. It wont have had the production plate changed to reflect the change in engine, so it will still say Fj45. What does it say for the diffs (on the production plate)? And how does it drive?

If you want info on this engine, ask away, this is probably the penultimate knowledge store on the web for this model at least.

More pics of your truck?

Nice, cheers.

Basically I paid a grand for it last night. It's rough, but the engine started and ideled so smooth when I went to test drive it (bought it off a work colegue of a mate of mine), it has been sitting in his paddock not being used. He reckoned it hadn't been started for 2 months, and she started with ease first time.
It's not registered yet, I need to fix up some small things on it.
One of the diesel injectors seems to be leaking.
Rust doesn't really seem to be an issue on it, which surprised me.
My main concern at the moment is the electrics, seems to have had a fair few dodgy jobs done on it. But considering it's age, there's not that much to the electrics, so I should be able to get stuck in and clean that up. The really important things work - lights and indicators. I still need to check the tail and brake lights. But I don't think the gauges are working - probably related to some of the dodgey wiring.
Drives alright - I haven't driven a car with no power steering in a couple of years since I sold my old VJ Valiant with a 265 Hemi. So it took a little while to get used to the heavy steering - but it makes driving it more fun!
Front diff is noisey, but he's given me a spare second hand one with the car.
I need to do something about the exhaust, it seems someone has replaced the second half of the exhaust and made it into a side pipe just behind the cab. I like this, but it's far too noisey with only a single small hot dog resonator. I'm going to get a set of extractors, make the exhaust 2 1/2" all the way through and put a larger muffler in there to quieten it down. Keep it as a side pipe though.
Gear box is pretty smooth, clutch feels fine, rear diff seems fine. Front shockies look like they were replaced not long ago - they're very clean and have a shiny blue paint job.
Other major issue is it needs a new radiator, this ones has cracked and previously had a dodgey fix job.
Ah, and the handbrake don't work. I'm hoping it's something simple like a snapped cable.
Interiors about what you'd expect, nothing special at all, ripped seats, aside from that it's pretty good in my opinion for a 40 year old workhorse.

All up I reckon I can spend another grand on it, and have a pretty sweet ute for a bit of bush bashing, towing the boat and the odd run to the tip.

I'll get some more pictures up when I get a chance.

id be checking the chassi number cause that isnt a 69
dash is late model after 1980

and i beleive the 69 wipers should be above the window
bonnet should have a join down the middle
and indicators should be different

sounds like it may have been ghosted at some stage

I agree, thats either a late model petrol interior, or a changeover period diesel. It has the foam dash, but not the big black metal dash insert with digital clock? Late model door trim and door handles, but dash mounted handbrake (early model). Pre 78 headlight facia, 60's early 70's side mirrors, 70's-80's wipers/windscreen surround. If i had to guess, id say its an early 80's petrol cab with really early mirrors and a slightly earlier headlight surround. Engine and gearbox are mid 80's. The ute version didnt come out with the 5speed either - ever, so at some point the gearbox at least has been changed. Most likely engine and gearbox at the same time. Might want to check that the handbrake is even connected. Early models came with the handbrake drum bolted to the transfer case, late 83 on they put handbrake linkage to the rear wheel drum brakes via steel cables. If they replaced the gearbox/engine, handbrake is sometimes conveniently forgotten.

What's ghosted?

Well the compliance plate on the firewall says FJ45. The registration is all for a 1969 vehicle. My guess is that it's had later model parts retro fitted into it.

or it was once registered as a 69 model, from what i can see of it,theres not alot of 1960s 40 series on it,i have a mid 60,s 40 series, dash especially is spartan compared to yours, but nice pick up,looks like a good buy, theres always the chance that a later model cab has been thrown on an early model chassis, seen a few on ebay of late early 70s but with the 47 cab on them

ok looking at your pics again you have a mid to late 70,s tub ,probably put on to replace the original tub on it,looks to have newer model doors, with the quarter vents, its common for 40s to have interchangleble parts

Looks like a pre 1980 cab, but post 1980 heater box

still, a solid rig.

Utes were never offered with a 5 speed, only short wheel bases.
