Can you do your own Spring over/Bodylift?

In a recent topic I thought that about 75% of the regular posters could do this, but have come under some critisim regarding this, So i wanted to know if you can or not? Please be honest :)

I didnt vote because a body lift should be able to be done by most people that have half an idea but a spring over conversion is a huge job that not many can actually do right.

But in answer to your Question yes i could do both as well as coil conversions motor/trans/body swaps and most other work others pay to have done.
My rig has been totaly built without haveing to get others to do the work for me. Yes i have had some help from a few who know who they are and i thank you but the majority has been done by myself. Exhasts are about the only thing i ever pay to have done because the money places charge just isnt worth the headach of me doing it my self.

A springover is't that hard...as long as you understand pinion angles and tracking, maintain castor, know the how and why of torque rods and have enough suspension knowledge to set the right length shocks for correct extension and compression without the wheels fouling...how about spring packs...which leaves to remove and why, how high to set them, what to do with keepers...
I think a body lift may be in a seperate class...

Yes, I agree with MudToy.

I have done a bodylift, wuite easy actually.
Have not and probably wont do a SPOA, Mainly as I am living in QLD, and they are quite easy to spot, local constabulary, may not like it that much.

Might make myself sound like an idiot but I would not know where to start on a SPOA conversion to be honest.

A spring over truck isn't that easy to spot from a stocker :roll: :roll: :roll: :D :armsup:

I thought this myself untill I was forced to build my own due to it being xmas and all the shops being shut, or booked out till the new year. it is amazing how cheap the wholesale prices of mufflers and tube and bits are, and it is nice to have your exhaust routed and mounted EXACTLY how you want..

A SOA done correctly will "look" normal. The trick is to keep it in perportion ..... IE: fit larger wheels and adjust the sprinpaks so the wheels actually look right in the wheel arches. Have a look at my avatar, is it SOA ???........................ answer yes !

Most mods are easy its the "Having a go" that most people wont attempt, they either feel they lack the skills or dont have the tools for the job, generally its lack of improvisation that stops em.

I've nearly finished a patrol that was full of rust.... its been totally redone and I have never done panel work before in my life.... I didnt buy a "dolly set" a proper panel hammer, or any of the other tools that are specifically designed for panel work..... I either made what I wanted or modded what I had, the exception to this is the spraygun I had..... I had to buy a new one just for the 2pak paint I'll be spraying her with ( the old gun was fud !)

A simple statement by a mate many years ago has always helped me out with problems..... he said ,

" How would you fix that if you were in the middle of the Streslecki trk with stuff all tools?"

Ever since then I have kept stuff "simple" and easy to fix, the more tech or intricate the design the harder it is to repair or replace.

Having said that .... I'm about to fit a new clutch to my rig.... its a rangie pressure plate with a 99 mod TDI clutch plate and that goes onto a holden flywheel that has been adapted to chev, this will then drive the 5pd box form an 88 mod nissan......
everything is possiable, its the having a go that fails

My vote was a "yes" to a body lift - I'm planning to do it myself, and it could be nasty if it turns out I can't do it!

Spring-over? I'm not sure what's involved, but I'd hope I could.

Bodylifts i can do in 2 hours. Easy as pie if ya know that car.
SPOA is a completely different. Its not even in the same class.
There are many different parts to a SPOA and alot of is it custom.

i cant vote cause the i will not vote. I can do bodylift no dramas.

I cannot do a SPOA FULLY myself, i could make the parts and brackets and i could cut where it needs to happen and bolt everything, there is one reason y i cant do the final crucial part of the job....................................................................................................................................... I CANT WELD GOOD ENOUGH YET!!!!!

But in saying that give me a few months and i should be able to do it well enough to give it a real good go.

Im a carpenter by trade but I still did my SOA wasn't
that hard, Theres 60,000 sets of instructions on the
net (Mostly Heeps)and if you cant weld good find a mate who can

I could do the whole job myself cept the welding, which the next time i attempt one i hope to do myself, but in the past mates always help :armsup:

i voted no. i have done neither a bodylift or springover myself before. but i have been pretty successful mechanically with everything that i have attempted which is most things that have been needed to be done on my car. i think i could do a bodylift myself. the springover i think i could do if i could weld and done a sufficient enough search on this site for relevant information, and problems that may be associated with the conversion.

never done either, but still voted yes.

as was said, if you cant weld, get some1 to do it for you (i'm lucky enough to have a boilermaker for a future brother in law ;) )

anything i've done to my truck so far I have done myself and starting to even do most of the welding. If you cant get enough info off this website and some of the other forums aswell, you are obviously doing something wrong!!

Proof will be in the pudding when I fit my bodylift!!! (might change my vote then :lol: )

Could do both of them, the only problem people may have is rotating the knuckels but thats no biggy as there are places you can get it done for a coupla 100 bucks

Screwy you must be a charger or have use of a fully quipped mechanics garage cause i`m only a home hack & the quickest i`ve ever done an entire bodylift using only car jacks & basic tools is 8 hours non stop (Not including lifting of bullbars & adjusting gear levers).

So far i`ve done a Diahatsu F20, two Zooks & an 85 4-Runner (the F20 was the first ever done & the easiest).

Body lifts dont take that long
on a 4 runner i think we did it in about 3 hours not rushing too much as you only have to lift the body
60s take a little longer to work out the low range selector and dropping the radiator.

Body lifts and springovers are completly different classes of jobs.
Even reading info on the web etc you stlill need to know exactly what you are doing for a spring over. I personally would not be able to do it due to lack of skills, idea, and tools.
Body lift can be done with 2xbottle jacks and a socket set. You simply cant compare them.
I dont think anyone could stuff up a body lift too much but a lot of people out there have stuffed up spring overs.[/quote]

i think i must have been lucky with my car, because when the rear axel was sprungover, myself and Adam (my45) did it without other help and that was my first time. Then when i needed to lower it for rego in feb, adam stuffed up his shoulder in that rollover so i did all the work myself. Criuser's must be easy because i sure aint a quick learner! :D However i have never done or looked into body lifts.
