Outer Limits 4x4 Board

hey fellas i'm a noob with mitsi's.


a mate of mine has a 06 'runout' (05 model?) dual cab and is doing a trip from brisbane through the south end to perth, then back through the guts.

Q. he will be running stock suspension, but loaded. what TYRE SIZE & BRAND/TYPE of tyre would you guys recommend for him.

i'm a landie man and don't know much about tritions.

any feedback much appreciated fellas.

For touring, I'm a big believer in 265/75R16s - they'll fit the standard factory alloys, and they should fit OK with stock suspension, but it really depends on how loaded he runs. I'd be a little concerned about off-road touring with stock suspension - load wise he should be OK, but I don't think the travel is terribly impressive.

Brands are obviously a very subjective thing, and you're probably better off reading General 4x4 Tech for a wider discussion. Personally, I prefer more aggressive tyres like MT/R, MTZ, S/T, STT, or BFG MT - new or old. The Toyo M/Ts look very good, but they are expensive. If he wants something less aggressive, I'd consider tyres like Desert Duellers (D694?), Toyo OPATs, Pirelli A/Ts or even the good old BFG A/Ts. However, I've read a few too many questionable reports about Cooper AT/Rs, primarily on wet bitumen - I wouldn't recommend them. Whatever tyre he chooses, I believe it is imperative that your mate understands the importance of tyre pressures, and how to choose the correct pressure for the conditions. No tyre will perform to it's best without the right pressures.

Not to sound a smart ass but I think the 265/75R16's are too big for the old model triton... I have an MK V6 and an ML DiD, the ML will turn the 265's with ease but the MK has different gearing and struggles on even mild grades with them and there was a noticable decline in performance off-road in terms of getting power to the ground - very hard on the clutch...

Then there's fuel economy - I went from (stocko's)12's/100km to (265/75's)15's/100km travelling between Melbourne and Mansfield, the difference was even worse off-road...

I do agree with the tyre selections and reasoning though...
