Petrol or LPG in a dual fuel GQ

ok, ive got a 88 SWB GQ, was dual fuel but on my last rego inspection we found that the tank is outta date, and is in not very good condition, so decision was made to buy a new gas tank, and having no luck finding one + running out of time fast im considering putting it on petrol only for a while till i get the rest of the stuff needed for a EFI V8 swap...
whats involved to do that? do i just rip the gass tank and mixer etc out and put the fuel tank in and plug the hoses/pump in? how do i go about rego when i put fuel in it again, just take the LPG compliance plate off?
and also the big Q
how do they go offroad on petrol only?? i kno LPG was good cause it hardley stalled but never ran it offroad on petrol

and b4 you say it, yes it is Dual fuel... but no i dont have a fuel tank in it

all suggestions appreciated

edit: also has electronic ignition -- no points

also the previous owner said that it has "hardernd valves so the head wont crack on LPG or something, will this matter on petrol??

No.

He was presumably referring to valve seats. Crap old engines without hardened valve seats require the lubricant effect of tetraethylene lead to stay in shape.

Hardened valve seats do not, hence can run on unleaded or lpg.

try a secound hand unit...

Some testing stations have 2nd hand units for sale at half the price of a new one, email me and I'll give you a ph number of a guy I deal with. His tanks come with 10 warranty, new inlet/outlet, and have a 10 year inspection plate fitted, and a flash coat of silver paint :D

Alternativly try a wrecker for a tank, I've found they are around the $100 mark for a tank with more than 5 years left in the inspection date.

well ur gonna run EFI petty in the V8 when u do that conversion so u could just buy the petty tank for now and then its less work later. Or u could chuck a new gas tank in and u will right till u get around to doing that and rego wont be affected either.

What motor you got?

If it's a decen't V8, go a quadrajet. My 350 will run for 10 mins on 45 deg without stalling. I can even turn it off and re start it.

the problem with petrol on 4x4s is when the rig hits certain angles the floats inside the carby cant handle the angles, this then either floods the engine with excess fuel or starves the engine of fuel. Specificaly designed carbys are availiable for offroad rigs.

The alternatives are either LPG or fuel injection....

Fuel injection systems have no floats that can be effected by angles we see when offroading but arent cheap to purchase or fit & require a computer to control them accuratly.

LPG also has no need for the float setup as it is a presurised liquid that is converted into a gas and then delivered to the engine under pressure, its realitivily inexpensive to purchase and fit and is a cheaper fuel than petrol.

I have seen some normal carbys that have had their floats reset to counter the angle problems but never to any great sucess.
