Assuming these are a rotary vane style of pump it will have a short life. You can throw lots of oiling tricks etc at it, but sooner or later you will end up with a sanden or york compressor.
A/C gas carries lots of oil in it and is very clean. rotary vane pumps have very large sealing areas (they are kind of like a rotary engine) and when run as an air compressor it's almost impossible to keep enough oil up to them to make them work effectively and not flog out.
Yorks are cheap and last forever. (they are a piston compressor with a sump, just like a workshop air compressor)
