Are those the rocky road ones? if so I've heard bad things about shipments etc with them :?

I dont run the 8:1, but i would think the gear teeth would be getting small :?

given the work required grinding the case etc to fit S3/4 and 6.5's, 8's I don't think would cut it. Better off getting better diff ratios especially as you're running toyo items there will be heaps available.

i would say it would be fine in 4 low but in 2 high you would struggle to sit on more than 75kmhr. I agree if you have toyo diffs get gears in them

twin cases maybe the answer also ... there was a thread where a guy from Spain replaces the jack shaft with a 4 speed Volvo gearbox

There's been talk of the 8:1s for years but I've never actually seen a car with them fitted. Hardy had a planetary box that fitted in place of the jackshaft but it was a one off job from what I know.

6.5s and diff gears for the 37s.

37's would be fine in low range with 6.5's so long as you're not doing too much rock crawling super slow stuff. High range I'd imagine it would suck major donkey dick though. How the hell do they fit 8:1's in the case anyway?

8:1's in my opinion would be way to much for the case to handle, and would need to be strengthened heaps to stop it from spilling gears all over the road. Even then, I think your tailshafts and uni joints will cop a hammering.
I think diff gears would be better.

These are the lowest gears available for the Samurai transfer case. Low Range reduction is 7.875:1 to 1, that's an incredible 250% lower than stock! High Range reduction is 24%, perfect for the larger 34" and bigger tires. These gears are NOT WELDED or second rate. These are are strong and take a huge amount of abuse. This complete kit includes four new precision cut gears, counter shaft, needle bearings, shims, o-ring, gaskets, and input/output seals. Updated front output shaft highly recommended for tires 31" and bigger (see below). We also Highly recomend a 1 peice mount like that of the HD Cradle or Mighty Kong below. Minor grinding of case is necessary for installation. Fits 1986-1995 Suzuki Samurai's. No cores are required.
US$899

I asked Sean about these a while ago (just before the ass fell out of our $) , He said grinding was only a tiny bit more than what is needed for 6.5:1 gears.

4.88 ratio about $500 for crown wheel and pinion from snake racing or of older diesel hiluxs. you can go even higher with early hiace van diff centres if you can find em

That would be wrong.

80 diffs run different gears. The front is high pinion and the rear is cruiser sized, not Hilux.

On topic,

I'm pretty sure you can get 4.88's as aftermarketfitment for 80 diffs. I've got 4.88's in my car with 60 diffs. You will need to keep in mind that too much gearing makes wheel speed near impossible.

The 6.5 gears with 4.88 difs should be low enough. If you feel that you need more control than this fit an auto.

With the standard 80 series gearing, your looking at 97.5:1 crawl, swapping to 4.88's will get you 115:1. That's using the 6.5:1 transfer ratio. I think either way you will be fine in low range with the 6.5's, if you want more gearing.control then as Sierra Jim said go auto. Personally I would go auto now providing you are going to up the power a bit.

Layto....

I hate to say it but I think when you're after stupid low gearing for mega rock crawling and daily drivability, Joe Blow has the idea with twin transfer cases.

Locktup do 4.88 gears for the 80 for about $500 delivered

Without the diff gears your high range will suck the big one.

I'm running Vit 5 speed into vit transfer into 6:5's with 4.88's and my high range is just ok

Massive gap between high and low. I find it a bit frustrating with 6.5s so 8s would be worse.

Definitely do the the diffs to change high range as well.

 What did Want33s do to get banned today?
