Question for mitsu gods! Not 4x4 related

Okay,
Got a proton gti that has the mitsu 4G63P engine (p stands for proton). Currently investigating turbo upgrade or engine conversion. I am wanting to know what cars had the 4G63T (t stands for turbo) in them? Was it the VR4 galant or Evo lancer. I am pretty sure that the gsr lancer ran the 4G61, i think?
Does anyone know how i would get on with dot regarding emission standards? Is there some law that stops me putting an engine in that is older than the vehicle? I am hoping not becuase its a 6/2003 vehicle!!
So who is a street 4cyl buff?
Thanks

It was the lancer that ran the 1.8 Turbo which is exactly that same as the engine that you have in there at the moment but with a turbo. It depends on how much power you want and what you want to do with it. A cheap optiohn would be to just fit the exhaust manifold and turbo with a low boost setting or the other option would be fit the complete turbo engine. I really think that either option is viable as both will probably exceed your front wheel traction regardless of tyre type. I wouldn't bother with the 2lt Conversion as it will be costly and the power difference between it and the 1.8 will only come apparent at much higher levels of power eg over 200kw ATW. I have owned a turbo lancer and they are a zippy little car with a bit of boost and a decent exhaust.
Cheers

Grant, the Lancer GSR had the 1.8 DOHC turbo started at 141Kw and was upgraded to 145Kw during it's model life I think it was a 4G61 code.
The imported Lancer Evo's all run the 4G63 and started around 180Kw and now are up around 206Kw (maximum allowed by Jap legislation).
The Galant VR4 also ran the 4G63 DOHC turbo which was 149Kw from memory (not as much boost etc as the Evo).
This is the one I'd be looking at getting, I've seen them for around $1500 but thats not with the wiring harness or ECU, maybe better to source a half cut that way you get the lot.
Have no idea about Queensland DOT regs but in Vic as long as it's engineered and can pass roadworthy an be registered with the new motor.
There is a few chat forums about Mitsi stuff like this such as the RPW and Bishi Boys forums there's guys that have dropped these donks into Cordia's and stuff

Its a 4G93 guys... not the 4G63 like i thought. Its a DOHC 16V running about 10.5:1 compression. Not too keen on just bolting a turbo to it
Got onto rpw who make a turbo kit, and warrant it for 20000kms that may be worth looking seriously at. Depending on what is included because most of the bits are just easily accessable becuase of the lancer/mirage market.

Turbos on cars with 10+ compression ratios are not impossible, its just that you can't run much boost, so you've gotta ask why bother?
Just a word of caution about RPW. I used to have a 1974 Galant with all the boy racer bits (twin carbs, extractors, 10.5:1 compression, cam etc.) and saw them advertising billet camshafts for early Mitsubishi 4 cylinders. I was on the phone real quick to ask for details, and they were a bit startled by the query. Their response was to try to convince me to buy a rally motor they had built for a customer who didn't collect - 14:1 compression, needs to run Avgas - no matter how much I told them "daily driver" they insisted it would be good for me...
They take the "Racing" aspect of their business very seriously!
Good luck,
Scott

Ummmm yeah turbo is fun. Qld DOT says you can't put a motor into your car which is older. as in a 1998 vr4 motor into a 2003 proton. i have a hot 4's magazine which has a full vr4 conversion of a gti and he had well over 200kw at the froint wheels. good fun.

I put older engine in my old paj and my old suzuki. Because it was the same engine code, ie 6G72, qld transport did not care.
If i removed a 4g93 and install a 4g93 with a factory turbo kit, surely it can be pushed through....
Custom turbo kits are like 6K + fitting. Front cuts are 3K...

I'm only guessing, but I would have thought that if you can prove it still complies with all the 2003 ADRs they can't stop you? Have you asked an "approved person?"

Ok... I am told that providing it complies with emissions regulations at the time that vehicle was made it can be plated.
HAve decided to go the gsr 1.8 DOHC turbo (4G93T) as it uses existing engine mounts and gearboxand its about 1.5K cheaper. Very easy conversion. Front cut should be bought this week and all should be done in the next few weeks. It will take the little thing from 103kw to 145kw. Plans for the haltech ecu, front mount and bov are soon to follow. Not much point going for much more as I cant get the power to the ground...
Went for a spin in one that had an evo3 4g63T conversion done. It literally did not get traction till 3rd gear... A little too much horsepower for the girlfriends car!!!
It was either supercharge the paj or turbo the proton.
Proton won....... this time anyway

Turboed my mates Proton GTi last year, used a T28 roller off a S15 200SX on a custom turbo manifold, 3" exhaust turbo back with twin rice boy cannons, Haltech E6K ECU, front mount intercooler etc and a few other little things, it goes ok no probs frying the front tyres in the first 3 gears.

I will also add that a mate I know turboed a GTi in Perth. Used the lancer turbo manifold, Haltech etc. Goes great, fries tyres.... Forget traction...

Cool... Im pretty excited. Originally going to turbo the existing engine with the lancer manifold and gear, but a complete conversion is far easier. At this stage i will retain the factory (gsr lancer) computer. Until $$ permit.. I know of about 10 turbo gtis in aust so far.

Just bought myself a front cut yesterday..... The install should happen the week after easter.... hopefully...
My insurance went up $200 for replacing the engine with a turbocharged one.... Not bad i thought.
