I bought a zook, now what ;)

Firstly it feels strange to be in the Suzuki section...... but I'll learn to love ya's
Since my SWB GQ Patrol got stolen in November and I recived a mediocre payout from NRMA I din't have too much to play with to get another 4by so grabbed a zook to tide me over for a year or so till the right GQ comes along.
I just bought a 1990 SWB Sierra.
Has a G13BA in it with a Webber 32/32 carby and Ramflo air filter.
Aside from that it's stock as apart from a bunch of ricer bling that has got to go!!!!
Body lift and drop shackles are coming to fit a set of 31" MTR's. Then will be a change of ratios and lockers.
Been reading up on the bible the last few days but I want some advice on the general things to look out for on these zooks. What goes wrong with them/things to look out for and what are the unique aspects of my zook. I so far know its a TYPE 6 JX and has a wider track that other models??
Cheers guys.
Flame suit at the ready
Ricer.........

Chain down that alloy bullbar. They're a valuable commodity and frequently stolen by ruthless genuis criminals then shipped interstate.
Allegedly.

Woh, urm obviously you havent been in the Zook section before nothing goes wrong with Zuk's .....
Ditch that ram flow style filter if you plan on any serious wheeling, mud, crossings and what not. Body lift is probably an all right decision instead of using most after market branded Springs which are normally thicker have to many leaf packs and give a harsh ride. Get some decent shackles though so your steering and handling doesn't go to the shit. First up though is get out and wheel it and then you will realise why you should have got a Zuk instead of a Pootrol years ago ahaha..

The main stuff that goes wrong with them is the carbs? Correct if wrong..
And YES you have way more blue than my suzy
Because every part that i put on is generally black!
I did have a full custom blue interior though...

welcome to the zook section, if your looking for aftermarket leafs, old man emu from arb, get the comfort ride, you wont get much weight in the back but they flex!!!,
by the way, zooks go further than pootrols!!
Looks to me like you have a zook "BIG BLOCK"

welcome
.....ditch the weber for a vit carby.....and add a couple of lockers to those ratios you mentioned.

by get it up there
hey buddy!! Gotta love the zooks!
Bit of warning before you go looking into changing the gearing ratio (assuming you'll be getting transfer gears), brace the housing, otherwise you'll smash it in half!! Found out the hard way after only 1300 k's
Plenty of good parts out there to buy, BBM have heaps, and low range off road (usa) have got bucket loads to

hahahahaha dude all that zuk needs is P plates and you're set! haha thats shocking!
Liek someone else said - take it out as it is and wheel it a few times at least so you know what it can and cant do - this makes you appreciate the mods your doing and may influence the order in which you do the mods...
bet you keep it more than a year too =)

by short stuff
once you have a suzi you'll never stop
1st itll be tires then gears then bigger tires then lockers it never ends

First thing I would buy is some good sunnies
Careful you don't get cataracts, that is one bright dashboard
Needs a few character dents

Biggest problem isn't the carby as someone has mentioned. It's denting the crap out of the fuel tank when your wheeling it.
As a former Patrol owner myself, you'll be suprised how capable the zook is when you take it offroad for the first time. One of the guys in my club was giving me stick saying that my Zook was a Landcruiser starter motor, but on an 8 car trip to the Watagans recently wheeling with other standard and modified Disco's, Land Cruisers and Patrols, the Zook was the only car in the pack that did not require a single recovery through the day.
I have to admit, it's a great feeling knocking off the bigboys.

Well to ad some valuable info to this instead of mentioning the colour or your patrol here goes.
STAY AWAY FROM DROP SHACKLES! Do a search on this.
One of the best combos if just a simple 2 inch lift with good springs (OME is a safe bet but avoid anything that says "heavy duty" think light with a zook), 2 inch body lift and 31" tyres on -14 offset 15X7" rims. This will require the cutting of the front bar outriggers and some custom bar mounting or a new bar that uses different mounts. You may or may not need extended shackles for 31's depending on the car, the tyres and if you extend you're bumpstops but don't go too big with the shackles. With this combo you may need to start looking into extended brake lines also, cheap from any loal brake/hose shop.
For any tyres over about 28" you will want some better gearing also as the zook motor doesn't have a mountain of torque, research this and you will find transfer case gears very popular with many people going straight to the series 4 or 6.5:1 transfer gears. Be warned though this must be incorporated with a one piece style transfer mount (ie mighty kong) or something like the "rocktoy ring" sold on here to prevent the case cracking. there are many diff gearing options also if you wish to go further, Joeblow is an expert on this (and as he'd like to make out on everything else lol). Gearing not power is what will make your driving experience on big tyres alot more enjoyable.
at this point you may want to go further and then you'll need to look into things like RUF (rears up front), gaurd cutting, YJ jeep leaf conversion, wheelbase extension, virtual lift, things like lifting the fuel tank, extended shock hoops for longer shock, custom leaf packs, 3/4 elliptic, engine swaps etc all these things are covered on here. I know the bible is a little hard to use the and search can be a pain in the ass but persevere and reasearch before asking and if you cannot find something ask for a link to it in the "Silly question thread".
Steer clear of Spring over axle unless you really really really know what you are doing, it often results in a poorly engineered spookily high vehicle. Alot of people fit 34" tyres without the need for SPOA so if you think you need it think again and if you have to ask questions about SPOA then you are not knowledgable enough to undertake such a drastic modification properly. There are alot of SPOA cars but very few done properly.
I hope I've helped.

also one of the first thing you should do is remove your front sway bar

Decide on tire size, then build from there.
The larger the tire, the more modifications you will require.
Taking into consideration your intentions for the vehicle, like will it be at
Tuff Truck or will it be driven on the road for day trips ?
Each to their own ,

this is mine with no lockers and 33" jt2's massive traction. Mind you once i got lockers i snapped 3 axles in one go just something to consider

body lift, use the added clearance to lift up your transfer case & exhaust (& maybe fuel tank if you can be farked) & love sliding on your chassis while every other big zuk breaks their exhaust manifold & gets hung up on thier t-case.
some stock rear springs in front with good shackle angle for big downtravel flex (longer shocks), ome rears 2" rears, bash the seams in the guards, 31's, 6.5:1 transfer gearing, rear locker, & enjoy a cheap shitter that lifts wheels, is a ball, & still crawls futher than a 35'd patrol for 1/5th the price.
If you get serious (or into speed) definetly think about a cage. Not much tin up top in a softy.

very easy to have a rockin sierra for under 5K by grabing stuff off here and using the tyres too small for the patrols

Grave dig.... only cause I'm selling the Blue Zook
I practicly got given a 1996 coil sprung Zook a couple of months after buying the blue one and it has been gathering dust not long after that.

Coily is a round town car, the leafy was the project off road fun zook.
I still need a daily driver and unfortuanatly circumstances will prevent me from doing any 4x4 for a whiles yet.....
In an ideal world I'd keep the leafy for sure!!

there is nothing wrong with a coily. most people will say they are hard to mod blah blah blah
but with:
2" bl
2" sus lift
a little guard cutting, 31s will fit easy.
you can swap out the transfer case for a leafy one and fit gears.
you can get a locker for the rear diff but nothing for the front unless you got $$$ money to spend on modding one to fit.
you can also get coil spacers cheap

You can alsobend or snap the control arms like twigs
You can also tear all of the control arm mounts from the diffs
You can also bend the front axle as they are weaker than leafy ones
You can punch the strut tops out on the front
You cannot change diff ratios
I have EDITED it for you
