Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Ok after the weekend - I NEED new tyres. I don't want any bigger than what I have now (can't remember the size will have to have a look). What does everyone use and recommend. I do 120km a day on the highway so I want something that is good on road and does pretty good on off road too.

I bought some 235/75/15 Pirelli Scorpion A/T's about two months ago and for a not too agressive tyre I am pretty impressed with them. I have noticed a slightly increased rate of fuel consumption, but not huge (about 50 kms less per tank).

They arent noisy, and track reasonably well onroad. Offroad they are major improvement over the road biased tyres I was wearing. I got the Pirellis really cheap (almost wholesale) through a mate, so that was a big reason for the choice.

You might however find its better to get two sets of rims, one with highway tyres and another with offroaders. Sunraysias or copies arent more than $50 new, so its an option. Work out what the fuel consuption would cost and then how long it would take to offset the cost of the second pair.

I just suggest this cos of the k's you said you do each day and this way you get the best of both worlds.

Go for these. They are excellent on-road also, I can tell ya that.

Are you running standard size tyres now (eg. 225/70R15)?

You'll find that their aren't many (any?) decent off road tyres in that size and you'll have to go up to at least 235/75R15 to get a real off road tyre (but that size is an illegal fittment on a Feroza in most states....) If you're worried about staying legal 235/70R15 is the largest you can go- Cooper are about the only manufacturer that makes tyres in that size.

Also, what sort of off road driving do you mostly do (gravel roads, mud, etc.) From memory Cooper, Goodyear and Toyo all make A/T tyres in the standard 225/70R15- but they're all going to suck big time in mud.

All Terian tyres are a good comprimise tyre if you drive on the road a fair bit and want to go off-road as well. You can fit 30.5 x 9.5 on standard feroza rims. Mud terrians would be noiser and wear out quicker driving on road.

On the subject of tyres and rims. Do 15x7 for example come with different offset Or is the offset the 7 inch width of the rim, therefore 15x8 has a greater offset than 15x7

They are not standard for a Feroza 225/70/15 is Ive just put on BFG all terrain and are pretty good on and off road 215/75/15. If you go to 235/75/15 it will throw your speedo out.

WRONG !! - the slightly larger tyres will actually drop your overall gearing so you use LESS fuel. Before swapping my original tyres to the 235/75's at 110kmh it was doing around 4000 RPM - basically revving its guts out in 5th !! I was always looking for another gear. 235's dropped this to around 3800 RPM from memory & the 31's down to around 3500 RPM. This hurt me on the hills ( just slipped it back a gear or 2 though ) but on the flat with 31's it would just tick over doing 100-110 all day.

Why didn't they pick up on the larger 235's ?? Because they bascially don't give a stuff about a slightly larger tyre on a 4wd & 235's are not exactly a big tyre anyway.....

Personally - if you are doing a lot of freeway but still want a decent offroad tyre then don't look past the BFG All Terrain KO's - best allrounder on the market - by a long way.
Just keep the 235/75 size - best all round size for the Feroza IMO. Gives you decent clearance & allows you to run them offroad with around 18PSI wothout dragging everything on the ground.

Besides - if you already have that size installed - you're just replacing like for like

Couldnt agree more.

I ran 235/75 BFG muds KM on my Feroza. I would drop pressure to about 12psi offroad and even 8psi on sand. Worked then.

mine revs its guts out now at 110 km (revs at 4000rpm) its going to a proper 4x4 place soon to be looked at I am still not convinced everything is ok with it.

I 've had BFG A/Ts 30.5 x 9.5 on standard rims 3 years and they never let me down over a range of surfaces moderate to hard. I even went around a corner too fast and hit a road island which buckled the rim but the tyre was too tough.
In regards to legalities, you won't get booked for having these tyres even if you smash. There is plenty of other 4x4s eg-toyos and zooks getting around that won't comply so they must look at tread wear for roadworthiness not size. If safety is the issue, I agree with MJHSurfin that slightly bigger than standard tyres are better and safer.

Once the f-300 bodylift is completed (hopefully this weekend) I will be looking at bigger tyres and rims, then Fraser Island it's on. So I will have a cheap set of rims and/or BFG A/T tyres for sale in the next few weeks which are still in good nick.

That's a bit of a bold statement to make! If you get pulled over by the cops and they start checking over your vehicle there's a very good chance they will defect you, I've read posts in the General Tech of people getting done for exactly that.

Some of the things to consider when fitting larger tyres:
1. It makes your vehicle defectable
2. It will void your insurance policy (the fine print always reads somewhere "vehicle must be maintained in a roadworthy condition"....)
3. It changes the gearing of the vehicle- it will accelerate a lot slower; fuel economy will change.
4. The centre of gravity is higher- so the vehicle won't be as stable
5. Your brakes won't work as well and more effort will be required to pull the vehicle up.
6. Your speedo will read lower than you're actually going.

It's a personal choice, but it pays to know all the facts before deciding.

Sure, that's no worries Murcod I completely agree with you. It's just I've been involved in 2 car accidents, and one was my fault and no probs with the insurance at all. As for the cops what can I say, um .........no comment.
Look if you're having so many problems murcod why don't you move up to Qld ... it's better anyway.

I had a quick read and it says +15mm / -26mm size difference allowed without engineering approval.

235/70R15 works out to exactly 15mm larger diameter up from the standard 225/70R15 (plus have 10mm wider tread to fill the guards out nicely). Cooper make the Discoverer AT in that size, which I've got fitted on mine. I've found them really good off road on gravel tracks, but haven't had them in mud yet. On road they actually handle better than my old 225/70R15 Bridgestone highway tyres! They have an amazing amount of grip around corners, the ride is softer, they're quieter etc. I also got 15x7" rims at the same time, but most of the improvement would be solely the tyres.

They're not the cheapest tyre at around $200 ea, but they do come with a 50000km pro rata guarrantee.

I had the Cooper Discoverer AT 235/70R15 , still got them , found them to be a good tyre but wanted a more aggressive tread so I went for the Cooper STT

I whould recomend Coopers any day had STT 10.5/30 for weekends and A/T 215/70 for in the week ended up only using the A/T all the time went every where with it its quiet and grips like hell if you do go into mud a lot why not look at ST its like the step between A/T and a full on mud.

I have just put ST on the Jeep and even with 4L power and speed these pack a great punch they do tend to be a bit more snotty in the wet or is my foot just to heavy. They are slightly more agresive than the A/T so it does have a bit more Road noise. Still less noise than the brigdgestone A/T

I too have too agree with some of the boys that the cooper range of tyers is one of if not the best wearing tyer on the market.

Firstly...no way the Feroza was ANYWHERE near rollin' in that other thread!!! Don't let those bluddy Zookers spook ya Ferog!!!! Just go at it harder.

Anyway, my old BFGs still take a bit to beat, but depends on suspension and what car they're on. Muddies on a Zook (Sierra) = somethin' like ice skating in the wet, but jus' about any tyre will give ya the same experience.

As for A/Ts....I don't think I'll EVER be convinced they're a good tyre. I've driven a lot of different trucks, and have never felt comfortable with 'em. Cr@p on road in the wet, and cr@p offroad in most of the stuff you'll encounter on the east coast of Oz. I've got muddies on both my current trucks, and they stick extremely well to the road in the wet, in fact the roadies that were on the Vitara when we got it waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalked everywhere at the slightest hint of moisture, I've still to seriously break traction with the muddies.

Anyway, jus' my $0.02 worth...
