Replacement Alternator for Hilux

Ok.

So my alternator has a nasty habit of crapping itself when going through mud/water and quite frankly, I am not going to skirt around the fun parts of my 4wding adventure due to it.

Its a 1986 Hilux single cab with 4y engine (yes yes, it struggles to do a constant 110km/h, but so far has proven itself in the bush), I am led to believe these are a external reg style alternator and that the problem lies with the external reg side of things.

I am looking for a direct replacement bolt in style if there is one available for this engine to ensure this doesnt happen in the future.

Anyone know of something to that will cure this?

I had the same year 'Lux but with an 18R in it that had the same problem.
Turned out to be a filter capacitor (looks like a points-dizzy condenser - a little can with one wire coming from the centre of one end) mounted externally on the rear of the alternator shorting when wet.
The fix was a dob of silastic on the end the wire protrudes from and completely removed the problem.

Will check in the morning to see if I have same setup and if so will do that when I stick the new alternator in.
